“They were originally treated really well, fed and taken care of like royalty. Later, for reasons no one quite knew, they moved to the beastkin lands and became parda folks.

“On ancient Earth, they had been national treasures. Even during the zombie outbreak era, they were still well protected and properly cared for. After they evolved into humanoids, they became even more humanlike. Back on ancient Earth, they usually had no more than two kids, but after arriving in the Abel Star System, they could have up to five per litter.

“In a very short time, just a few panda folks turned into huge family, and their numbers kept growing. On top of that, they were smarter than most beastkin. They went into business, grew vegetables, and cultivated bamboo shoots.”

Growing vegetables?

Growing bamboo shoots?

So farming wasn’t just in the Hesperians’ blood?

Even Hesperia’s national treasure had it in their DNA?

That was insane.

As expected of Hesperia’s pride and joy, carrying on the great farming tradition. Big respect. Thumbs up.

“That wasn’t even the most important part,” Blake said, then asked, “Take a guess how they actually made their fortune.”

Sylvara wasn’t sure. “Growing bamboo shoots?”

Blake smirked. “Wrong. They got rich through real estate.”

“What? Real estate? Did I hear that right?” Sylvara’s mouth fell open in shock. It was beyond unbelievable. Hesperia’s national treasure didn’t just master farming, they even picked up Hesperia’s overpriced real estate game?

Blake nodded. “You heard right. Real estate. Over 3,000 years ago, even though beastkin were becoming more humanlike, their wild instincts still dominated.

“They lived in tree hollows, treetops, and caves, wherever was convenient. After the panda folks arrived, they used money from growing bamboo shoots and vegetables to earn their first pot of gold, then started buying land, lots of land.

“They cleared it, built houses, big and warm ones. Way more comfortable than tree holes or caves. Naturally, a lot of beastkin came down to buy them. By elling houses over three thousand years, they ended up building 99 percent of all beastkin housing.

“The panda folks were united and tight-knit, especially the Boyds. They controlled 50 percent of the beastkin economy. Even the Beast King showed them respect. There was also a rumor that after three thousand years of wealth accumulation, the Boyds were rich enough to rival entire nations, but no one actually knew how much they were worth.

“The Cryo Planet produced massive fruits that emitted healing mental energy. It was jointly controlled by three factions, and of course the panda folks wanted a share. Endbloom House was property the Beast King gave to the Boyds to win them over. Get it now? Douglas was basically royalty among the beastkin, insanely

Sylvara started applauding, her eyes wide as she praised him. “No wonder my little panda baby said he could afford to take care of me. That’s impressive.”

“Impressive my ass,” Blake said, nearly driven crazy by this bargain-bin daughter of hers. “Did you forget why we’re here? Are you still going to steal the battle armor of Hesperia’s late War Goddess or not?”

“Of course I am. Did you get the buyer’s info?” Sylvara said immediately. She turned her head to look at Blake. That armor still had her underwear inside it. For the sake of her underwear alone, she was getting it back no matter what.

Blake lifted the hand wearing her optical computer and waved it. “I don’t know the buyer’s full details, but the little panda was pretty loyal. The buyer left an address. Not only did the kid give me the address, he even handed over a hundred thousand stellar coins so I could buy candy. He also said he’d send me another hundred thousand every month as living expenses.”

Sylvara grinned, baring her teeth, and gave her a thumbs-up. “Daddy, you didn’t spend a single coin and got yourself a great son. You even secured retirement money. That’s impressive.”
