Chapter 177

A couple seconds passed before the alpha wolf gave a slow nod. “It’s gone. I’m… free. Thank the Goddess…” The beast looked up and over to see his former fated mate in Riaghaire’s arms, unconscious and possibly on the verge of death. “Is she alive?”

“She better be,” Claire snapped, taking a step towards him without fear. “If she dies, I will make it my life’s mission to wipe your pack off the face of the earth.”

The Alpha scoffed then frowned when the other Alpha – the one with skin like the night Hendricks Bluemoon. You are a disgrace to our kind.”

moved to stand by Claire. “You don’t deserve the title of Alpha,

A sneer found its way onto Hendricks’ face. “Says the traitor. You’ve sided with those Others. Have you no loyalty? You’re the disgrace.”

“I agree,” Briarwood’s voice snapped, reminding everyone the Council of Elders was still present. “Alpha Donovan, whether you remain Alpha of the Mchezaji pack will be decided by the Council once we review the evidence of your—”

“Fuck you and your review,” Alpha Donovan scoffed. “Strip my title away? Do whatever you want. Just because you say I’m not an Alpha won’t change the fact that I lead a pack.”

Ashcliff laughed, as though the Alpha had told some grand joke. “We will take that pack from you.”

“Oh?” Donovan smirked. “I, Donovan Bahiti Mchezaji, Alpha of the Mchezaji pack, reject the authority of the Council of Elders who govern the North American packs. Me and mine no longer cede to their authority and no more shall they command us to do as they please.”

Riaghaire watched as all seven Elders flinched. Alpha Donovan, for his part, showed no reaction to what he’d just done.

“You realize you just turned your back on your own kind?” Elder Wulfastra sounded worried, as if she expected something horrible to happen now that a pack wasn’t under their control. “You’ve just sealed the fate of your entire pack. You’re nothing more than rogue wolves.”

“Wrong,” Donovan chuckled. “A rogue is a lone wolf who didn’t choose to be one. Neither my pack nor I are lone wolves; we are pack. We are exactly what we were before I cut the ties that bound us to you. All of you are corrupt,/spiteful creatures who aren’t fit to lead anyone.”

“We’ve got about a minute,” Riaghaire heard Claire mutter. A minute before what? Oh. The ward. She’d said it would hold them off for five minutes. Had four already gone by?

“We know his true name now,” Lan’gny whispered to his twin, who nodded.

“Mmhmm. There’s much we can do with that.”

“You will do nothing with it,” Claire told them, voice like steel as she glared at the twins. “If you ever use it, or tell another of it, I will personally make sure

you’re separated and unable to see one another for a century.”

Their smiles faded, replaced by looks that would make a grown man fear for his life. “Watch yourself, Claire,” Ptyrese warning, voice lower than normal

“We may like you and we may dislike fighting, but don’t think we won’t end your life to prevent such a thing from happening.”

“If you harm Claire, I will personally end one of your lives,” Riaghaire informed them. His greine would have said as much and, with her unable to speak up.

it was on him to do so in her place. “The other will live the remaining years of their long life alone.”

“You know not what we are capable of, nightwalker,” Lan’gny hissed.

Tou think you can take one of our lives? You are nothing to ones like us.”

“Perhaps,” he nodded as he slowly raised his gaze to look at them. “But I have an infinite amount of time to plan and the ability to hold a grudge for just as

long.”

“Don’t worry about me,” Donovan assured them. “I’ve decided to trust you all. if you betray that trust…” He shrugged. “I’ll consider it balancing the books. Besides, the Council already knew my true name. If they spread it around they’d only be painting themselves as vindictive children.”
