Chapter 180

CLAIRE

0:01

“What’s the plan?” Alpha Donovan asked, voice low as he stood next to Claire.

Why the fuck was he asking her? He was the Alpha. She was just some petri dish of randem genetic fuckery. Wait. Right. She’d been put in charge of their group, which meant she was actually in charge of Donovan.

Mother. Fucker.

Turning her head, she looked at Marlow. “What have you got in your bag of tricks?”

“This and that,” the witch shrugged but a smile was tugging at the corner of his mouth as he reached into the satchel he brought everywhere. “Whatcha

looking for?”

“Something that’ll leave an impression.”

“So many choices,” he cackled as he pulled out a handful of what looked like shooter marbles.

“As for you, Alpha,” Claire continued, turning back to Donovan, “You do whatever you want. Marlow and I will take care of ourselves.”

Donovan raised his brow, as if he wanted to ask how they were going to manage that. There was a good chance he was now regretting the fact he’d taken their side but, at this point, it was too late to change his mind. Sucks to suck.

“Kill them all,” Elder Briarwood ordered the two giant wolves, who began stalking towards the three of them. “I want their heads.”

That was pushing things a bit far, Claire thought with a frown. It meant they were serious about wanting them dead, which was… fair. They had crashed the party and she’d caused a stir with the whole ‘Ashcliff’ thing. Hopefully any wolf who’d heard the declaration would think to ask questions – lots and lots of questions about what had come to light.

The sound of ripping clothes drew Claire’s attention and she looked to see Donovan had shifted into his wolf form. He was actually a beautiful creature,

a pale, golden brown with white undertones. It made her want to hug him and run her fingers with fur the colour of a lightly toasted marshmallow

through his fur to see if it was as soft and fluffy as it looked. Something told her the man wouldn’t appreciate it so she kept her hands to herself.

Wolf Donovan moved to stand between her and the enforcers. Though the Alpha was, large, when compared to the other two he looked to be on the smaller

ľ side.

“Marlow?”

“Don’t worry ’bout me,” the witch replied as he moved to stand closer. “I’ve been practicing a ton and my aim is spot on nowadays.”

That wasn’t what she’d been concerned about but still good to know.

The witch tucked his thumb against the crook of his index finger. He then placed a marble on his thumbnail and took aim. “Tried something new with these babies,” he mentioned as he flicked his thumb, sending the marble flying at the nearest of the two approaching wolves.

It was obvious the wolf didn’t take the threat of being struck by a mere marble seriously, choosing to ignore the flying object like it didn’t matter. After said marble exploded, its shockwave pushing both enforcers back a handful of meters, it was possible they’d changed their mind.

“Ldor: think that hurt them,” Claire pointed out, keeping her voice low.

“Not suppose fo,” Marlow snorted “It’s about pushback.”

“Oh,” she exclaimed, realizing what the witch was getting at. It was meant to keep their pursuers far away while they escaped. Duh. “You get that, Alpha?”

Donovan flicked his tail, which she interpreted as a yes. Good. Last thing she wanted to do was explain it out loud.

“On my count,” Claire began as she took a step back. “One…” Another step. “Two…” And another. “Go!”

Donovan lunged for the wolf on the left as the other bolted after Claire and Marlow, both of whom had turned and made a break for it.

The witch twisted around and flicked another marble, stumbling a little in the process. The tiny glass sphere struck the ground and exploded, forcing the wolf to come to a stop, bracing itself to avoid being pushed back. It let out a loud snarl when it jumped back to the chase.

Claire focused on putting one foot in front of the other as fast as possible. Running was not her forte, nor was she particularly fond of the activity, but desperate times called for desperate measures. She just wished they didn’t leave her with burning muscles, screaming lungs, and wanting to die so the

torture would end.

They reached the tree line, which was surprising as it’d been a fair way from the amphitheatre. She’d been sure that, even with Marlow’s exploding marbles, their pursuer would have caught up to them long before they reached the forest.
