Chapter 197

And yet he still lived. Locked away in the Mchezaji pack dungeon – Alpha Donovan disliked it being called that, but a dungeon was a dungeon – with his

Beta as they awaited sentencing.

Though all of this was important information, it was background noise for Riaghaire. His attention was focused solely on his gréine. She was kept in the break room, as it was the area with the most foot traffic least by the staff. This meant she was never alone, not that he left her side since regaining

senses.

One would think it boring, sitting in a folding chair for hours on end, to watch over someone who lay there without moving. It was fortunate that Riaghai was accustomed to being stuck in a small space with nothing to do for decades on end; compared to his imprisonment, this was akin to paradise.

And so he sat, book in hand, waiting for his gréine to wake.

It was, however, a kind of torture. Waiting was torture when the life of his gréine hung in the balance. Not that he expected her to die – not with how the protections Claire had woven into the building worked – but it was impossible to know if she would ever regain consciousness. She was human and had experienced something that was known to devastate a far more resilient species. The fact she was alive at all was a miracle in itself.

Riaghaire let out a low sigh as he glanced away from his book to check on Beatrice. Gregory had left some time ago – he still had his own work to do, spending only his free time curled up on his gréine – so it was just the two of them at the moment. Neither of these things stopped him from physically checking for her pulse more often than necessary but worry was what it was; all consuming.

A picture book, perhaps, might have been a better choice. Things were easier to read when pictures told the story.

Engrossed in his own thoughts, the vampire was unaware that something had changed until the sound of someone taking a deep breath brought hum back! reality.

His eyes snapped to Beatrice, noting that her shallow breathing had changed to something deeper. When had her heartbeat grown stronger? How had w missed the change?

If his own heart could beat, it would be racing as he dropped the book and reached for his gréine’s hand. He held it against his chest as he wallhed ther eyelids flutter, a feeling of relief swamping him at seeing the movement. Tightening his grip on the hand he held close, he reached out with has so carefully brush his fingers along the edge of Beatrice’s face. He wasn’t the praying sort once, long ago, he would have been het wat siber bang Taraved and yet Riaghaire found himself hoping someone was helping her come back to hing

“Mmm..” came humming out of her throat as Beatrice’s lips parted just a bit.

“…gréine?,” he murmured, worried that speaking too loud would somehow prevent her from waking

“…Ria…ghai….re?,” she mumbled as her eyes cracked ups n
