Chapter 36

BEATRICE

The tense atmosphere turned to one of confusion. There were plenty of things in the last couple of days that Beatrice didn’t understand, but Riaghaire’s demand for Tweedledick to remove his pants was now number one on that list. Why had he ordered the Beta to strip? The last thing she needed, or wanted, to see was the man’s actual dick. Not that she was about to share her opinion with the room, since the vampire’s grip on her throat was still uncomfortably tight.

With quick, angry movements, Tweedledick did as he’d been instructed and Beatrice had never been so glad to learn someone had decided that this particular day was not a commando one. Thank you, whatever deity might exist out there, for the asshole’s decision to wear underwear.

The werewolf now stood in his black briefs, glaring at Riaghaire.

Throw them to me,the vampire ordered, catching the pants once they’d been tossed through the bars. Much obliged.

You won’t escape, the Beta hissed, looking far less intimidating now that he was without pants. If circumstances were different like if there wasn’t a hand clamped around her throat Beatrice would have found the entire thing rather funny.

I am aware the pack is waiting just outside,Riaghaire assured the wolf, sounding bored as he draped the pants over a shoulder. It changes nothing. Should anyone attempt to rescue the Luna, I will simply snap her neck. She is human and humans are such fragile

creatures, are they not?

For the first time since learning about werewolves and vampires, Beatrice wished she’d been born something other than human, if only so a snapped neck wouldn’t be fatal.

We will be taking our leave now. Be a good little wolf and stay put for now. And remind your pack that a fight will only result in your Luna’swell. Need I explain the obvious?

Tweedledick began to growl again as fur sprouted from what skin was visible which, in Beatrice’s opinion, was far too much. Put some pants on already.

There was no warning as she suddenly found herself thrown over the same shoulder as the pants. The next thing she knew, they were stepping through the heavy door at the top of the stairs.

Snarls reached her ears as the door thunked shut Turning her head, she noted three huge wolves stalking towards them left, two from the right. Well this wasn’t good.

Riaghaire’s grip on her legs tightened just a little before they were off again. The world became a moving blur as he dashed down the hall with the one wolf. He somehow used the wall to avoid it, landing effortless on his feet afterwards.

Wasn’t he going to fight? Why was he just running? He’d bragged about how he enjoyed tearing their heads off but, now that he could do it again, he was running. Was he worried about getting captured again? That had to be it.

And where was he getting all this strength from, anyway? Was werewolf blood just that potent? Or would any blood give a vampire this kind of boost after so long spent without?

More wolves appeared as Riaghaire jumped onto the stairs, practically flying up to the third floor. He tore through one of the doors and Beatrice was a little sad it hadn’t been to the Alphassroom; it would have been a nice parting gift, forcing him to replace his bedroom door. Alas, it just wasn’t meant to be.

The next part felt like it happened in slow motion.

Beatrice watched two wolves shoot through the empty door as the sound of glass shattering filled the air Riaghaire had jumped through the window. The world was now filled with sparkling bits that twinkled and twirled all around them. Her stomach dropped at the realization they were now airborne, three stories above ground, and a wolf was leaping after them, teeth barred in a snarl.

Just like that, time snapped back to its normal flow and it felt like they were flying falling. Wind whipped the skirt of her dress an

played with the loose strands of her hair for what felt like an eternity as they plummeted back towards earth.

When Riaghaire hit the ground feet first, it jarred her enough to elicit a grunt, but they were in motion before she knew it. He was able to move so fast it felt like they were airborne a second time. If they weren’t being chased by freakishly huge werewolves, Beatrice might have

enjoyed the feeling of taking flight.

The wolf that had leaped after them landed much less gracefully a few meters from where they had and took a moment to gather itself before resuming the chase.

A haunting howl rose from somewhere, soon followed by a chorus of others.

Beatrice’s heart began to pound in her chest. They were being hunted. She’d never thought there’d come a day when she would feel like some helpless animal being chased by a big bad wolf, and yet, here she was, with that exact thing happening. Little Red Riding Hood had nothing on this.

Riaghaire took a path that had them racing through a modest town where dirt roads reigned. What she could make out of the homes and land under the light of the full moon looked like they were neat and well maintained.

A wolf rounded the bend behind them, its eyes glowing an eerie gold. Whatever colour its fur was, it blended in too well with the night to make out. It did, however, look bigger than the others by a fair bit. Its paws dug into the ground with each step, leaving clumps of dirt in its wake. Good. She hoped they ended up with thousands of shitty potholes.

The shoulder under Beatrice shifted, the vampire’s grip tightening in the split second before they were auborne again. There was no stopping the startled yelp that came out of her, or the grunt when they landed on a root before taking flight for the third time that night

Playing leap frog with the houses, forcing distance between them and the wolves, was smart. Unlike the vampire, the tour legged beasts were having a bit of trouble with the leaps and drops. Maybe if they’d been cats, who were built for graceful landings, things would have been different but, as wolves, they were built to run on a more even surface It Riaghaire had kept to the road the wolves have caught up

in no time.

The largest wolf was stubborn, following their exact path no matter how difficult the vampire made it.
