Chapter 88
0431
Taire rittened, as if she’d been caught doing something she shouldn’t. “It has to do with my job,” she explained after a pause. “Don’t worry about it.”
Beatrice stared at her friend for a long moment before shrugging. “Alright.”
She wasn’t stupid, even if she was human. Beatrice knew her stormy-eyed friend was hiding something. was painfully obvious. What had tipped her off the first time was how Claire had known Riaghaire was a vampire at a glance. The blond’s indirect answers on how she’d learned about Others, and gotten a job at a bar specifically for them, had also been red flags Beatrice couldn’t ignore.
It was aggravating that someone she saw as her best friend was unwilling to open up, but she also understood not trusting in others. Except they’d been friends for years, and Beatrice told Claire everything. Well. Maybe not anymore. She hadn’t talked to anyone about how the mate bond was starting to affect her more with each passing day, or how she was struggling to keep the mental clamp in place. More of Hendricks was leaking through, and it made being around Riaghaire difficult in some ways. There were times when she felt nothing for the vampire because the Alphass’ emotions were sneaking into her brain. She’d find herself thinking about Hendricks instead, and not in an ‘I fucking hate this guy’ kind of way.
