Chapter 94
BEATRICE
“This is Riaghaire,” the vampire said, his voice sounding unsure.
Beatrice couldn’t help but smile at his awkwardness. Phones made him uneasy and watching him use one was always fun. Eventually, he’d get the hang of it and the awkwardness would vanish but, until then, she was going to enjoy every moment of it.
“Where’s Bea?” Claire sounded worried.
“I’m right here,” Beatrice replied with a roll of her eyes.
“There are two vampires standing outside. Their Master has requested our presence.” Riaghaire made it sound like this sort of thing happened every day.
There was a brief pause before Claire asked, “Did you just say there are vampires outside?”
“Yes. Fledglings, but vampires nonetheless.”
A sigh came through the phone. “Bea-”
“Before you accuse me of running my mouth, I did no such thing,” Beatrice interjected. “At least not to warrant their Master asking for a face to face.”
“…why does that make it sound like you ran your mouth after they demanded the meeting…?”
Beatrice glanced up at Riaghaire, who looked far too amused. “I’m insulted you think I would ever do such a thing, Claire. That’s just rude.”
“Riaghaire… please tell me she didn’t run her mouth.”
“She made certain to match their… tone,” he replied after a moment, earning a groan from the human.
“Traitor,” she muttered, crossing her arms in a show of stubborn refusal in accepting his assessment of the encounter. Even if it was true. Sort of Amit of ap
understatement, but who cares.
“How is there a brood in this city?” Riaghaire asked, head cocked to one side as he frowned. “Why have the wolves not forced them out Wbs have they bot forced the wolves out? I do not understand how an entire brood has been allowed to settle in an area so full of Others”
“The Master vampire is not only strong but smart,” Claire explained, sounding unhappy. “It was before my time but I heard that, when she settled here her brood was already decent size The wolves tried to force them out but ended up in a stalemate instead Probably for the best toy if the wipes the Mchezaji park out, other parks would respond and there’d be an all out war in the city No thanks Anyway They’ve been in that stalemate ever since they can’t wipe her out and she leaves them alone”
“Wait. The Master vampire is a she? Wouldn’t that make her a Mistress?, frowned Beatri
“Does it matter?” Claire asked “Master Mistress She’s bad news either way She’s only grown stronger since seitling here Ward on the street is the dy reason she lets the local pack stick around is because they police the others in the area so she doesn’t have to do d herself
“I see…” Riaghaire murmured, finger tapping his chim “Vampires are solitary creatures by nature Even within a broad ties prefer being left to the o

Brally seems kind of obvious to me, Beatrice pointed out. Lots of humans do it all the time, especially at work. People who barely pull their weight, furcing others to pick up the slack; it’s a time honoured tradition for tons of us.”
“You forget that vampires, though they were once human, have different priorities,” Riaghaire explained, voice gentle. “Our priority is securing food Always Rarely does one think past that desise, unless their sire forces it. Even then, it is not if our nature to plan further than our next meal. This Master she secured the future of her brood for decades, possibly centuries to come. So long as things remain as they are, her brood will survive it means she is Old.
And dangerous.”
“Old means… exactly how it sounds, I’m guessing? But there’s more to it than that, isn’t there,” Beatrice sighed, crossing her arms on the table as she watched the vampire slowly nod.
“Vampires gain more power with age. The older the vampire, the stronger they become. When one speaks of being Ord, it is… never good.”
