Riley’s POV
The whole school was buzzing with team talk for the next few days.
Everywhere we went, students were chatting excitedly, showing off their skills, trying to recruit each other.
The older students had it easier, obviously. They had more experience, more skills. And if you were hot and popular it’s even better–people practically begged to be on your team.
My two roommates didn’t even have to try. On the second day after the announcement, I saw them giggling as they accepted invites from a group of senior warriors.
And then there was Ezra.
This guy couldn’t take a single step without being swarmed. Girls, boys, fanboys, fangirls–everyone wanted to be on his team. I even saw a girl break down sobbing after he rejected her. She dropped out of school that same day.
“What’s Ezra’s major?” I asked Roy.
“You don’t know? He’s a warrior.”
T
Of course he is. Tall, muscular, aggressive–total alpha–hole.
“Is he any good?”
Roy gave me a look. “He’s the best! He’s the King’s son. That royal bloodline makes him stronger than any other Lycan already. And he grew up in the army. Real–life battle experience. I heard they made this year’s competition harder just because he’s in
it.”
I rolled my eyes. “Well, even the strongest warrior’s useless without a good healer.”
“True. But rumor is, he’s saving the healer spot for Danica. His girlfriend.”
“I thought he didn’t do girlfriends. Just hookups.”
“Danica’s the closest thing he’s got. They’re always together. Plus, she’s a high–ranking healer. They will make a great team. Probably lock up the championship before it’s even started.”
Then after Roy described Danica for me, I realized that She was the one I’d caught having sex with Ezra in that West Wing
classroom on my first day.
I let out a sneer internally. Hope they keep that same energy during the competition and mess it all up.
But while people like Ezra and Camila didn’t have to worry about team drama, there were also people like us who weren’t so
lucky.
Wherever Roy and I went, we could feel the stares. People were just waiting for us to cave. Waiting for us to beg someone to take us in, just so they could laugh in our faces and humiliate us publicly. That’s the reason why I hadn’t made a move so far.
But what made me really angry was what happened to Roy.
He went up to a couple of warriors between classes. Guys he used to be friendly with. I didn’t see what happened, but when he came back just before class started, his shoulders were slumped and his face looked awful.
“What happened?” I frowned.
“N–nothing…” he mumbled, hugging himself.
I grabbed his arms and lifted his shirt. There it was- two words scrawled in black marker across his chest: “FUCK OFF.”

I shot to my feet. He yanked me back.
“Where are you going?” he panicked.
“To a professor. Or the admin office. Anywhere. They can’t get away with this,” I snapped.
“Don’t. You’ll just make it worse.” Roy’s face turned red. “Please don’t make it worse.”
“We can’t let them win.”
“They always win! Because they’re stronger. Haven’t you figured it out yet? The teachers all want this to happen. This is Royal Academy–only the strongest survive. If you can’t handle the rules of the jungle, you’ll get eltminated before the games even
start.”
I clenched my jaw and sat back down, my fists gripping the edge of the chair.
“This is my fault,” I whispered.
Roy sighed. “It’s too late for that. What if we don’t find a team? Will they really kick us out?”
I didn’t know about Roy, but I was sure of one thing–this school, and some of the teachers in it, wanted me gone.
“Don’t worry. I’ll figure something out,” I promised.
That night, back in the dorm, I sat at my desk and pulled out my laptop.
I started writing a flyer.
“Two Healers Seeking Team.
First–year students with advanced healing knowledge. Skilled in emergency care, pain reduction, strength enhancement. Capable of treating poison, bites, bullet wounds, fractures, and more. Interviews before team confirmation. Contact number
below.”
I printed it and snuck out in the middle of the night to pin it on the school’s bulletin board. I made sure no one saw me.
In my head, I was sure of one thing: there was no healer stronger than me in this school, not even the teachers.
So if I could prove myself capable, I wouldn’t need to worry about finding a team.
Because when it came down to the real games, no one would care about these stupid popularity contests. They’d care about
survival.
A night passed. The next morning, on my way to class, I saw a crowd gathered in front of the bulletin board.
“Well, well, look who’s here! Our amazing little healer, Riley Monroe!” someone shouted as soon as he saw me.
The crowd parted. And I saw my flyer.
It had been ruined, completely. Scribbled all over with nasty drawings. My phone number circled in red marker, with a note: Want a whore to screw with? Contact this number.”
My hands balled into fists as I marched up and ripped the paper down.
“Strength enhancement? Bullet wounds? Poison?” Camila stood nearby, arms crossed, voice filled with mockery. “You think pretty highly of yourself.”
I turned to face her. “Just because you can’t do it doesn’t mean I can’t.”
“Oh please,” she scoffed. “That’s third–year content at least! Strength enhancement isn’t even taught here!”
“Well, the school’s material isn’t that a big deal to me anyway,” I said flatly.

Laughter exploded around us. Camila and Layla laughed so hard they almost cried. They thought I was crazy. But I knew I was telling the truth.
“What’s your team name Lasked them suddenly
They raised their eyebrows. “Why do you ask?”
“Scared to tell me?”
Layla sneered. “It’s ‘Moonlight Team.‘ Remember the name.”
“I will. Because I’m going to crush your Moonlight Team in the Hunting Season.” Tinformed them.
More shrieking laughter as Camelia cried, “Get yourself a team, loser! Then worry about crushing us!”
I ignored them and walked toward class, crumpling the flyer in my hand until it was shredded.
Those two bitches–the war was on.
Our first class today was Lycan History, a big lecture that mixed all years and majors.
By the time I walked in, the room was packed. Everyone was still talking about the Hunting Season. I heard some teams were already planning on group training.
I kept my head down, found an empty seat, and just as I was about to sit, someone bumped into me from behind.
