Riley’s POV
He was a guy I’d never seen before—tall, handsome, and clearly a warrior just by looking at his build. He wasn’t as bulky as Ezra, but he had that solid, alpha male energy all the same.
I didn’t know him. Why would he help me out?
When he caught me frowning at him, he flashed a grin, showing off perfect white teeth. “Nice to meet you, Riley Monroe. If you’re down, we’re teammates now.”
“Well, you’re very lucky, Riley,” Mr. Smith said, looking just as surprised as I was. “Kade Steele is one of our top senior warriors. Great grades. Advanced skills. You’re basically safe if you’re in his team.”
Really? Why would someone like him choose to team up with me?
“So, what do you say?” Kade nudged.
“Let’s talk after class. We need to go over some details first,” I replied cautiously.
“Well, of course. Happy to work with you.” He gave
anoth
smile and sat down.
I slowly turned around and caught Ezra still staring at me. That cocky, chill look he always had was gone. Now he looked straight -up pissed.
What? I mouthed at him.
He shot me a cold glare, then turned back to his desk without a word.
Kade’s sudden interest in me stirred the whole classroom. People started whispering, annoyed that I might actually find a team and wouldn’t get kicked out after all. The noise dragged on for so long that Mr. Smith had to raise his voice just to get the class moving again.
Two hours later, class ended. I was gathering my stuff when Kade walked over.
“So, made up your mind?” he asked.
Before I could answer, a hand slammed down
on my
desk.
Ezra had stood up and was now between me and Kade.
“Did you fucking forget what I said to the entire school?” His green eyes were narrowed and deadly.
Kade shrugged. “Come on, man. This is Hunting Season. It’s serious. We need a good healer.”
“There are plenty of good healers in this school.”
“Not as many as you think,” Kade chuckled. “Not everyone has the luck of having Danica on their team.”
“You can have Danica. But you’re not teaming up with her.”
A wave of gasps rippled through the room. Even I was stunned. Was Ezra seriously pushing his girlfriend on someone else just to keep me from teaming up? He must really hate me.
Kade looked a little embarrassed. “Dude, Danica would never go for me. Anyway, what’s the big deal? You’re not seriously protecting your little sister, are you?”
Ezra took a step forward. He was taller than Kade, and his presence was terrifying.
“I said no one teams with her. Is that not clear or are you just fucking deaf?”

Kade’s smile dropped.
I stood up, slinging my bag over my shoulder, and shoved Ezra aside. The class let out a collective gasp at that. “Let’s go,” I said to Kade. “If you really want to team with me, you don’t need his dam permission, right?”
Kade immediately grinned and followed me out. Out of the corner of thy eye, I saw Ezra’s face, and it’s dark with rage. Pissing him off was so much fun.
Kade and I left the classroom and kept walking until we reached an empty hallway.
I turned to face him. “Now you can tell me the real reason you want to team up.”
“What do you mean?” He raised a brow.
“You can’t seriously want me on your team just because of me personally. Everyone knows I’m trouble. So what is it? You hate Ezra and want to screw with him?”
He blinked, then laughed. “No! My dad’s his dad’s Gamma. I’ve known Ezra for years. I don’t have anything against him personally.”
Oh. So he was from a powerful family too. King’s Gamma. No wonder he wasn’t scared of Ezra like everyone else.

“Look, I just want a solid healer,” he said with a shrug. “Most students here are all talk. But you seem sharp. You really know strength enhancement?”
“One hundred percent.”
“Perfect. That’s exactly what we’ve been looking for.” He grinned again. “So, how about a trial training session? See how we click as a team?”
I thought it over. This guy’s motive was still odd, but I wasn’t about to turn down a strong team.
бо
“Sure. Let’s try it. When and where?” I asked.
“Today after school?”
I nodded. He
gave
me a dazzling smile and waved before heading off.
Besides history class, I had no other classes that day, so I went to the library to keep digging into how to remove a mate mark. I also did a little social stalking on Kade Steele.
He seemed pretty normal, honestly.
Confident, strong, macho–maybe a little too competitive, but not in a red flag way. Not someone I’d usually hang out with, but definitely not a total jerk.
Still, just to be safe, I didn’t tell Roy yet. I figured I’d test the waters with this team first. If it went well, I’d bring Roy in later.
After school, I waited at the front gate. Kade showed up in a flashy red convertible, the kind that makes people stare. The car screeched to a halt in front of me.
“Hey Riley,” Kade grinned, leaning on the window. “Hop in.”
There were already three other guys in the car–tall, broad, all clearly warriors. And they were all staring at me, which made me kind of uncomfortable.
“Your car’s full. Just give me the address, I’ll head over myself.” I told him.
“What’s the big deal? Just squeeze in. We don’t have much time.”
“You better not be this delicate during the competition,” one of the other guys said mockingly.

Ifrowned. Eventually I climbed in anyway. So I ended up squished between two of them, practically holding my breath to avoid gagging on their heavy cologne. The whole ride, they were talking about girls at school–some of the comments were pretty
nasty.
Thirty minutes later, the car stopped. Kade got out and opened two heavy tron doors. I stepped inside and realized we were at an abandoned construction site.
I looked around warily. “So, what exactly are we training today?”
The guys started elbowing each other and grinning like idiots. They looked excited. Kade walked over to two large cages and yanked off the tarps.
“This,” he said.
