I immediately wanted to hang up But it was like he sensed it, because the second I tried, he added, “If you don’t tell me, your mom. And I don’t think you want her knowing you got yourself into trouble, do you?”
I cursed in my head. This cunning bastard.
“So? What happened?” he pushed.
“Okay, fine,” I muttered. “I… I got into a bit of trouble with the police.”
That asshole actually laughed. “With the cops? Wow. I didn’t think you had it in you, Riley. I’m impressed.”
“Fuck off. It’s not what you think, okay? I was framed. So if you could maybe tell the cops who I am

I’ll call
“Oh, so now you wanna pull the ‘I’m the Lycan King’s stepdaughter‘ card? Yeah, no. I don’t think so,” he said coldly. “Your mom’s already taken enough advantage of this family. I’d say we’ve had enough.”
“Shit, Ezra! Are you seriously gonna leave me here? This isn’t funny!”
“Funny enough to me. Enjoy your night in the police station.”
Then he just hung up.
I cursed out loud.
One of the officers gave me a suspicious look. “So? Your parents coming or not?”
I took a deep breath. “They’re busy. Look, my mom is Everly Monroe. And I’m her daughter, Riley Monroe. You’ve definitely heard of my stepfath
King Soren. Let me go please. Because I really had nothing to do with this.”
The cop car went dead silent for a few seconds. Then every single one of them burst out laughing.
“Right. Your stepdad’s King Soren? Then I guess my mom’s the Moon Goddess,” one of them howled.
“You’re a crazy girl, aren’t you?” another one sneered, yanking my wrist and slapping handcuffs on me. “You’re coming with us. And we might need to give the mental facility a call afterwards.”
This night just couldn’t get any worse.
They dragged me to the station and sat me on a bench, chained next to a bunch of homeless people and thieves. The smell alone was enough to make me gag.
“Hey, princess,” one of the cops barked at me, “still not gonna tell us your real name?”
“I already did,” I said tiredly. “You just don’t believe me.”
“Do I look like an idiot to you? You look nothing like the daughter of a Lycan King. Now tell me your real info!”
I ignored him. Talking to him was a waste of breath.
He came at me with a baton, banging it against the bench. “You think this is funny? Keep playing games, and we’ll send you straight to the mental facility.”
I glared. “Don’t touch me. And you’ve got no right. I didn’t do anything.”
“Oh, I got every right. There’re too many damn werewolves in this city. You lot don’t do shit for anyone. Frankly, I could beat the crap out of you right now and call it public service.”
Rage boiled in me. I bared my fangs. “Fine. Try it. I’ll make you regret it later.”

“You threatening an officer?!”
He raised the baton, ready to swing. My hands were cuffed. I couldn’t even defend myself. I clenched my jaw and braced for the hit.
But it never came.
A hand stopped the baton mid–air.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” a cold voice growled.
I looked up and froze.
What’s he doing here? I thought he wasn’t going to come.
The officer snarled, “Who the fuck are you?”
Ezra gave him a look so chilling it shut the guy up. He yanked the baton out of his hands just as another officer–one with a higher rank–came running over, shouting, “Show some damn respect, you idiot! That’s the Lycan King’s heir!”
“What?” the idiot cop gasped.
Ezra tossed the baton back at him, then bent down and grabbed the chains holding my cuffs. One yank, and the metal split in half like paper.
“So.” He stood tall and glared the group. “What exactly did my sister do to deserve being chained up and beaten?” There’s a deadly silence. Everyone
was stunned. The cop who’d been harassing me went pale as a ghost.
“I–I’m sorry! I didn’t know…I thought she was lying…”
“Standing before you is the King Soren’s stepdaughter. My stepsister.” Ezra said.
His green eyes locked onto the man like a predator as he advanced on the cop. “She’s basically royalty. And you just raised a fucking baton at her. You’ve got a lot of nerve.”
The officer stumbled backward and actually fell to the floor.
Ezra looked down at him, then turned to their leader. “So what are you going to do with this man here?”
“We we’re terribly sorry… I’ll have him fired immediately…”
“Fired? That’s it? If that baton hit Riley, her arm would be broken.”
“Then whatever you say, sir. We’ll do it.”
Ezra let out a cold laugh. Then suddenly, he lifted his foot and stomped on the officer’s right hand.
There was a loud crack, followed by a scream of pure agony. His arm was snapped!
“That’s more like it,” Ezra smiled, satisfied.
“Ezra!” I shouted. That was way too far. What the hell was wrong with him?
He glanced at me and shrugged. “Looks like my little sister’s got a soft heart. Fine. Let’s call it a day. Can we go now?”
The officer was bowing repeatedly, sweating like hell. “Yes—yes, of course!”
I stood up and followed Ezra out. But before leaving, I turned to the guy still writhing on the floor and said, “I’m sorry about your arm. But if you’d bothered checking the security cameras, you would’ve seen those dogs really weren’t mine.”
“We’ll investigate it properly. We’re so sorry, Miss Monroe.” Their leader said humbly.

“You’d better.‘
I followed Ezra out of the station.
There was a sleek silver sports car parked outside. Not as flashy as Kade’s red convertible, but clearly still expensive. Ezra jerked his chin at me. “Get in.”
I was too tired to argue. I climbed in without a word,
“So? What dogs?” he asked as he pulled out of the lot.
I leaned against the seat, exhausted. “None of your business.”
“That’s how you thank someone who just saved you?”
“I thought you said you weren’t coming. Changed your mind?”
He scoffed, his eyes straight on the road. “Don’t flatter yourself. I didn’t come for you. I came because no one in the Ravenshire family should be locked up like a criminal. It’s about the family’s honor.”
I rolled my eyes. Can’t argue with that.
“So? What happened? You know I’ll find out anyway.‘
“Fine!” I snapped. “Seriously, what the hell is
p with people at Royal Academy? That Kade said he wanted to team up, but all he wanted to do was to use me as bait. He brought in a bunch of mutant dogs and had me stand there like a human shield so they could train.”
Ezra’s voice went ice cold. “Mutant dogs? Are you serious?”
“For sure. Huge beasts, poisoned teeth—the worst kind. If I hadn’t run, I’d be dead by now.”
The car suddenly skidded, drifting hard around a corner. I slammed into the door.
“Hey! What the hell is wrong with you?!” I cried.
“Shut up,” he growled, gripping the wheel. “You’re a fucking idiot, Riley. Kade was obviously an asshole and I tried to warn you already. Yet you still chose to team up with him. You deserve this.”
I fumed. “Are you kidding me right now? I didn’t have options! YOU made the whole school hate me, remember? You made me the target! I had no one left but Kade to team with!”
He cursed and hit the gas again. The car was shooting down the street like a rocket. I was getting car sick, but I held it in. I wasn’t giving him the satisfaction of seeing me puke.

Not long after the car finally screeched to a stop at the castle gates. I shoved the door open and staggered out. I seriously wanted to throw up.
“So, where’s Kade now?” Ezra asked behind me.
I gagged, then turned. “He got bitten by one of the dogs. Probably still in the hospital.”
“That’s all he got? A small bite?” His face was half in shadow, looking downright terrifying.
“Yeah what else do you want?”
“…That’s not nearly enough,” he muttered darkly, striding past me into the castle.
I rolled my eyes hard at his back.
Freak.
