Chapter 50: Can’t Hide
Riley’s POV
The atmosphere was tense. Deathly silent.
Those people were so cocky just moments ago. But now they were visibly shrinking.
Eventually Danica broke the silence. “Ezra, you don’t know what just happened. This was all Riley’s fault…”
Ezra cut her off icily. “The only thing she did wrong was stand here and let you humiliate her. What she should have done was tell all of you to fuck off.”
Danica’s face turned beet red.
“If nobody’s going to take their revenge on me, you can all get lost now,” Ezra growled.
There was pause. Then they all turned and left in groups.
Kade shot me a vicious look before walking away and mouthed something to me:
Just wait.
“I can’t avoid them forever,” I said, watching their backs. “This has to end in the Hunting Season.”
“Just some trash. I won’t let them touch you,” Ezra said dismissively.
“I don’t need your protection.” I shot him a warning look. “So stay out of it.”
He smirked at me, then leaned down close to my ear. His hot breath spread across my bare skin, making me shiver slightly.
“I’m simply here to remind you of our bet,” his sexy, husky voice rang in my ear. “Remember what you promised, sister.”
My throat suddenly felt very dry. I swallowed.
“And you’ll keep your promise too, if you lose?” I asked quietly.
He chuckled, like the idea of him losing was hilarious. Just then, shouts came from behind me:
“Hey! Let our healer go!”
Silas strode over, followed by Odin and Olivia carrying our supplies. He pulled me away from Ezra, eyeing him warily.
“Hey, you’re not here to spy on our strategy, are you?” Silas demanded.
Ezra put hands in his pockets and flashed a lazy smile. “Oh trust me,
I don’t need that to beat you.”
All my teammates glared at him. Then he waved at me, smirking. “Good luck, Riley.”
With that, he turned and walked away.
I let out a small breath. Odin suddenly turned to me and snapped, “I hope you remember he’s our opponent and keep your distance from him.”
I looked at him in disbelief. Really? That’s what he wanted to talk about after avoiding me like the plague for 3 days? “Thanks for the reminder. But I do remember,” I said, holding back my anger. “Do I really seem like the type to run around broadcasting our strategy?”
Odin looked at me with that complicated, suspicious look that made my whole body feel cold.
Olivia was quick to jump in-she never missed a chance to attack me. “Gee I don’t know. You and Ezra seemed to be having a great chat before we came over. Wonder what you were talking about that made Ezra smile like that.”

“Are you licking stupid?” I said icily. “If I wanted Ezra to win, all I’d have to do is join his team and be his healer.”
“Did you seriously just call me stupid?!”
“OK, that’s enough.” Silas raised his hand to stop us. “We don’t have time to waste on fighting. Strategy meeting, gather around, now.”
With obvious wariness, we slowly huddled around Silas.
“Here’s what we’re going to do. Instead of going after big prey right away like the popular teams will, we’re going to secure water, shelter, herbs, and terrain advantage first. Agreed?”
We all nodded.
Silas spread out the map and pointed to a route. “I kind of remember this map. There’s a rocky stream basin that most teams ignore because it looks bad for hunting. But that basin has everything we need: clean water, cave shelter, medicinal plants, and small prey good for warming up. That’s where we’re heading once the game starts.”
“Won’t playing it safe put us way behind the other teams?” Olivia asked doubtfully.

“We’ll catch up on points when the other teams start running out of resources.” Silas folded the map and looked around at us.” OK, I know we still have our unresolved issues. But once that cannon fires, I want us to think about one thing only-winning. I can’t stand losing to Ezra again.”
A short silence. Then Odin nodded. “I’m with you.”
“Me too,” Olivia said quickly. “Our parents would kill us if we don’t survive this game.”
“We’ll make it to the championship podium. I’m
Sure ” I said
Nothing was going to stop me from winning now.
Not even Ezra.
Just then, a deafening blast roared across the clearing.
The Hunting Season had officially begun!
Hundreds of students rushed toward the trees together. Some shifted into their wolves already. The pounding footsteps made the ground shake.
“Let’s go!” Silas shouted over the noise.
I followed my teammates into the woods.
The moment I stepped under the shade, a hand yanked me behind a thick tree trunk.
Ezra braced his hands against the trunk, looking down at me with a grin.
“What’s Silas’s strategy?” he asked.
“Nice try.”
I pulled out my dagger and pointed the blade at him.
“Get out of my way now if you don’t want to leave with a hole in your chest.”
He smiled. “So cruel.”
His emerald green eyes sparkled like diamond in the sunlight. He was so beautiful, like an angel that made you want to carve your heart out for and place in his hands. King Soren didn’t have this charm. I wondered if he got it from his mother.
Suddenly, he dipped down and kissed me hard.

My heart lurched. At that moment, everything faded away. All the people. All the noise. Gone. It was like we were in a bubble, just the two of us in this forest.
It was a very quick kiss. He pulled away before I could even react.
“Stay safe,” he whispered.
With one last look, he turned and vanished into the trees, so fast I could barely believe it. Damn Lycan speed.
I took a deep breath to steady my racing heart, then hurried after my teammates.
Our team pushed deeper into the woods, heading southeast.
The farther we went, the quieter it got. Hundreds of people entering this forest was like water drops disappearing info the ocean. The woods and mountains had returned to its eerie silence.
We reached the spot Silas had marked on the map by evening.
This place was exactly as he’d described: quiet, safe, and rich with resources.
I gathered the medicinal plants I needed while the others set up camp, refilled our fresh water, and tried to hide our base.
By the time everything was done, the sun had set.
