Chapter 62: Bad Mouse
Riley’s POV
Odin said something in defense, but his voice was drowned out by Silas’s angry growl:
“Riley’s a burden? Come on, she’s stronger than the both of you combined, and if you were smart enough you’ have the guts to admit that!”
“She’s stronger?” Olivia sneered. “Then why is she dead in a pit while the two of us are standing here safe and sound?”
Silas strode forward and grabbed her by the collar. “Riley got caught by that beast to save YOU. And you don’t even have a shred of gratitude?”
“I didn’t ask for her help. That was her choice, and she can live with it herself,” Olivia yelled angrily.
Silas cursed loudly and shoved her backward. “Let me tell you something. If Riley hadn’t teamed up with you, you two would be nothing. Probably dead within the first hour the game starts! And I say we keep waiting for her because I’m not going anywhere without her!”
He spun around and stormed into the woods.
Olivia rolled her eyes at his back. “God, who does he think he is? Yelling at us like that? We’re the only two teammates he’s got.”
“We still need him, Olivia,” Odin frowned.
Olivia gulped. Obviously, she knew they’d be doomed if Silas walked away now. “Don’t worry. He can’t abandon us now. Not after the game starts. And hey, have you seen how he defended that little bitch? I bet the two of them must be fucking-”
“Are you done?!” Odin suddenly growled.
Olivia’s eyes went wide. “Why are you yelling? I’m just telling the truth! Don’t tell me you still have feelings for that whore-”
“Enough.” Odin snapped and stormed off too, leaving Olivia alone in the clearing.
She kicked a pebble angrily and sent it flying across the river. After a moment, she started walking downstream.
Ezra and I heard everything from behind the rock.
“Can you believe her?” I gritted out to Ezra after they were all gone. “I know she doesn’t like me, but wishing I was dead? What did I ever do to make her hate me so much?”
“She hates you because her brother has a crush,” Ezra said coolly.
“What? That’s ridiculous.” I said, a little flustered.
“And Silas too. He’d rather lose the competition than give up on you. You really mean something to him.” Ezra traced his fingertip along my cheek, his eyes gleaming coldly. “It seems every man who gets close enough to you can’t help but be drawn in. You’re like a witch, Riley.”
His expression made me hold my breath. After a few seconds of silence, I asked, “You’re not seriously jealous, are you?”
Chapter 62 Bud Mouse
He narrowed his eyes. “Jealous? No. Because they are nothing in my eyes. But you should keep your distance from them. Neither of us wants anything bad to happen to them.”
The threat and possessiveness in his tone made me uncomfortable. But now wasn’t the time to argue, so I said, Well, you’ve walked me back and seen the bad mouse on my team. So it’s time for goodbye? We both have a lot to do.”
But he said, “If you leave now, you’ll miss the real drama.”
“What?” I was confused.
Instead of answering, Ezra took my hand and led me quickly through the woods downstream-the direction Olivia had gone.
We walked for maybe ten minutes before hearing some voices ahead. Without waiting for me to refuse, Ezra grabbed my waist and hoisted us both up a large tree.
We got a clear view from up there.
I saw Kade and his team, Camila, and Danica.
And then, there was Olivia.
She was standing with the enemies the very people who’d tried to kill us days ago-chatting like they were close friends.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
“Looks like you have more than one traitor around you,” Ezra’s cool voice whispered in my ear.
I wanted to get down there, but he squeezed my hand, signaling me to keep listening.
“Come on, Riley Monroe is dead!” Olivia’s voice was frantic. “She got swallowed by a Shadowfang. Kade, you saw it yourself!”
Kade was leaning against a rock, his face pale as a ghost. Ezra had bitten off his right arm, and that wound looked like it had cost him half of his life.
“And then Ezra jumped in to save her,” he said darkly. “Until I see a body, I’m considering that bitch alive.”
Olivia pulled at her hair, looking extremely frustrated. “I’m telling you, not even Ezra can survive those motherfuckers, okay? She’s dead, and so is he probably! I did my part of the deal, and now it’s your turn to keep your promise!”
Deal?
I frowned.
What deal?
“The deal was for you to kill Riley,” Camila said, leaning against a tree and smirking. She was actually polishing her nails. “But what did you do instead? You screwed up everything. You put that silver nail in her shoe, and she still healed and showed up for the competition. And Layla had to take the fall for you. God, you’re even more useless than Roy.”
I felt dizzy.
She was the one who put the nail in my shoe? Olivia?!
Criopter 32 Part Mouse
I’d thought it was one of my obvious enemies. But it had never crossed my mind that the snake was right beside me. In my own team.
Camila continued, “I thought being on the same team with Riley might give you a real chance to kill her during the competition. But you haven’t done a single productive thing since. And now you can’t even show us the damn body? How dare you ask us to keep our promise.”
Olivia clenched her fists, her face flushing red. “Those beasts swallowed her whole. Her bones are probably melted in the Shadowfang’s stomach by now. You know it’s impossible to get a body at this point. You can’t use that as any excuse to break your word!”
Camila rolled her eyes. Danica sat nearby with her arms crossed, expressionless.
Olivia suddenly stepped forward. And then, she dropped to her knees in front of them.
“…Please,” she choked out. “You promised to help me and my brother get into the top 3 if I killed Riley for you. We could never win on our own. This is our only chance…”
Camila straightened up and let out a loud, mocking laugh. “God, look at her! On her knees, begging through tears for our help. Winning this stupid competition really means that much to you, doesn’t it?”
“Y-Yes. Our parents worked so hard to get us into this school, and if-if we don’t have a good ranking, they’ll kill us…” Fear flickered across Olivia’s face.
Camila walked over and looked down at Olivia with pure disdain.
“The things you mutts dream of were things we take for granted,” she said arrogantly. “Like this game. We don’t need to win to prove anything. We could finish last, and our parents would still use their money and power to get us into the King’s court. Rankings only matter to trash like you.”
Olivia grabbed her pants frantically, pleading. “So-so if you don’t care about rankings that much, help me win, please? I’m not asking for first place. I know the prince’s team has that locked down. I just need second-No, third will do! As long as we make the top three!”
