Chapter 101

Clair

Moments later, I caught his scent, strong, commanding, impossible to ignore, as it drifted into the room just before the door opened. Alpha Maurice stepped in with that effortless grace of his, moving like a man who owned everything he laid eyes on, which he did at least in this pack and that is including me.

“I heard you were looking for me,” he said, his gaze locking onto mine and refusing to waver.

“Yes,” I replied, exhaling softly. “This room feels suffocating.”

He studied me for a long moment, his expression unreadable, before nodding slightly. “Alright then. Get dressed-we’ll go for a walk.”

That wasn’t exactly what I wanted, so I didn’t respond. His lips curved slightly, amusement flickering in his eyes. “I suppose that means you don’t want to walk with me,” he said. And he was

right.

“I’d prefer to walk alone,” I told him plainly.

He tilted his head, as if considering it for a moment, then replied, “No. But I can stay at a distance

while you do.”

So, in other words, either he followed me closely or from afar, either way, he wasn’t giving me the

choice to be truly alone.

“Never mind,” I muttered, turning away from him, irritation bubbling quietly beneath my calm tone.

I heard him sigh deeply, the sound heavy and thoughtful, like he was torn between patience and frustration, before his voice finally broke the silence. “Are you still not over the rejection thing?” he asked, and I could clearly hear the impatience laced in his tone.

“That’s exactly why I want to go outside alone to think,” I answered bluntly, still refusing to look at

him.

“You’re a hard shell to crack,” he muttered under his breath, sounding almost defeated. Then, after a moment of silence, he finally said what I’d been hoping to hear. “Alright, you can go out for a walk. I won’t follow you-but a guard will.”

I turned to face him then, meeting his gaze squarely. “From afar,” I added pointedly.

He nodded slowly. “From afar. But you’ll be having dinner with me tonight,” he added firmly, and I nodded in return. Since he had agreed to my request this once, I could at least compromise with that.

I I I When I stepped outside, the air was crisp against my skin, and I shivered lightly as I inhaled the fresh scent of nature. For the first time in days, I felt like I could breathe properly. Still, as I walked, my thoughts began to swirl restlessly. Should I really keep fighting this?

He was my mate, after all. Maybe… maybe it was time to stop resisting fate. Alpha Maurice, since taking leadership, had done remarkably well. Even I could see how much better things were under his rule-how his people respected him, how order had been restored. He wasn’t like Bella or their father, that was certain, the ones who almost destroyed Waterford Pack with their cruelty and greed.

Perhaps he wasn’t as bad as I had made him out to be. He was calm, collected, and treated his people fairly. And unlike others from that cursed family, he hadn’t shown me any real hostility. He didn’t even seem to want to reject me.

Still, I couldn’t make peace with all of this until I spoke with my family. So I reached for my phone and dialed my father’s number, the parent I am colder to, the one person whose counsel I always sought.

He picked up immediately, his voice sharp and worried. “Why haven’t you answered any of our

calls? Are you hurt? Did something happen?”

I sighed softly, guilt washing over me. “No, nothing happened, Dad. I’m sorry for making you worry,” I said, my voice trembling slightly.

“Then tell me what’s going on,” he pressed, the demand in his tone clear.

I took a deep breath before answering. “Well, you’ve been insisting I find out who my mate is. So…

Now you’ll know.” I took a deep breath and continued, “The Alpha is my mate.”

Silence filled the line for several long seconds before he finally spoke. “You mean that cursed family?” he asked, his voice heavy with concern. “Octavia, they may rule the pack, but nothing good has ever come from being tied to them-and you know that better than anyone.”

His words made my heart sink, and I found myself staring down at my feet, unsure of what to feel.

“Did

you try rejecting him?” he asked suddenly.

A short, humorless laugh escaped me. “Yeah, I did. That’s actually why I was confined in a room for days,” I admitted.

“What?” His voice shot up in alarm. “Is that why you couldn’t answer our calls?”

I quickly shook my head, even though he couldn’t see me. “No, no. My phone wasn’t taken away. I just… couldn’t bring myself to call,” I confessed quietly.

That seemed to calm him a bit. “Listen, Octavia,” he said after a moment. “We’re simple people

compared to him. So tread carefully. If you can, keep trying to push for a rejection-but in the end, the choice is yours.”

“I understand, Dad. Thank you,” I said softly. “Please tell Mom and Fedora not to worry about me.”

When the call ended, I lowered my phone and stood still for a while, the weight of everything pressing down on me.

But deep inside, Lalready knew the truth I didn’t want to admit-Alpha Maurice was never going to

reject me. And no matter how hard I tried to act oblivious, I couldn’t ignore the way he looked at

me… like a man who wanted to devour me whole.
