Chapter 122

Maurice

We sat down to eat, and the aroma of the food hit me instantly, rich, warm, and so inviting it was almost calling my name. No wonder Octavia is chubby; the way her eyes locked on her plate made it look like I hadn’t fed her properly.

But when I took the first bite, I understood. It was one of the best meals I’d ever tasted, the food was made with care. For a brief moment, the room went quiet except for the gentle clinking of

cutlery, and I found myself watching them, Octavia, her parents, her sister, all eating together like a family.

It struck me then just how foreign that feeling was to me. I’d never sat like this before, around a

table, sharing a meal, talking softly, laughing in between bites. There had never been anything

“normal” about my life. But right then, for the first time, I wanted that. I wanted this warmth. This

peace. A home that felt like this.

When we finished eating and set our cutlery down, I knew what was coming next the moment her

father cleared his throat. His expression shifted from polite to serious as he said, “I know I’m not

supposed to be saying this…” He paused, swallowing hard before continuing, “But are your

intentions with my child pure?”

His eyes flicked toward Octavia, and mine followed. She looked embarrassed, her cheeks flushed

red as she stared down at her lap. I looked back at her father and answered steadily, “Yes. After all,

she’s my mate, my better half. The one the goddess chose for me.”

He nodded slowly, studying my face. “Well,” he said, “you must have heard what your sister did to

her. So… forgive us if we’re a little cautious.”

I smiled faintly. I actually admired that, the way they were still protective of her, even in front of me. Fear was in their eyes, yes, but love was stronger. “I know,” I replied. “She told me. But I am not my sister. And I swear to you, I’ll adore my mate, Octavia, until my last breath. This I promise you.”

Her mother let out a soft sigh, as if she’d been holding her breath the whole time. Her sister smiled

genuinely, the tension in the air finally fading.

That moment, watching them care, seeing them protect her, feeling their warmth, it did something to me. It reminded me of everything I’d been missing all my life.

And honestly… I liked it.

After everything, it was time to leave. I heard Octavia’s sister sigh softly and say, “People are gathered outside.” Her voice was calm, but her eyes darted toward the window with worry.

“Of course,” her father said, straightening slightly. “They must have heard their Alpha is here.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at that. “Well, we’ll be heading out now. If you need help, I can have my

guards stay behind to make sure no one bothers you while Octavia and I are gone.”

But her mother shook her head immediately, a polite smile touching her lips. “No need, Alpha. We

can handle them.”

I nodded, respecting her confidence. Then I turned to Octavia, taking her hand gently. She smiled up at me, and I returned it before lowering my voice so only she could hear. “You have five minutes with your family. When the time’s up, I’ll come drag you out myself, understand?”

She nodded quickly, a faint laugh escaping her lips, and I released her hand, letting her go back to

her family. I stepped outside, and the moment I did, the chaos hit me.

Flashes burst in my eyes from every direction, camera lights, reporters shouting over one another, guards shouting back as they tried to hold the crowd off. It wasn’t just curious neighbors anymore. The press was here too, microphones in hand, hungry for headlines.

I exhaled heavily, shielding my eyes from the light. “Alpha, we’ve called in more men,” one of my guards reported as he stepped closer.

“Good,” I muttered, nodding, my eyes scanning the restless crowd. They were practically clawing

for a closer look, eager for a story.

Then Octavia stepped out of the house, her face paling slightly as she took in the commotion. The

moment her gaze met mine, I said quietly, “I know. Don’t worry, I’ll give your family the protection

your mother declined.”

She nodded, trusting me without a word, and slipped her arm through mine.

The guards quickly cleared a path to the car while reporters called out question after question-

“Alpha Maurice! Who is she?”

“Is she your mate?”

“When’s the wedding?”

I didn’t bother answering any of them. Because I knew by tomorrow, it would be on every front

page and that was fine by me.

Because the sooner the world knew Octavia was mine, the better. I didn’t plan on wasting any

more time before making her my wife.

Once we were safely inside the car, Octavia let out a soft sigh, the tension easing from her

shoulders. I reached over and took her hand, my thumb brushing against her skin as she turned her
