Side Story 5
Aria
My cellphone buzzed, and when I checked it, it was a message from Owen asking where I was.
I quickly typed back, asking where he was so I could meet him, and he responded almost
immediately.
‘On your front porch.’
Clain
He actually thought I’d be home, but I wasn’t, so I hurried and got into the nearest cab, urging the driver to go faster than usual.
By the time we pulled up to my house, he was right there-sitting on the front porch just like he said, waiting quietly with his hands on his knees.
And the moment I stepped out of the cab, his whole face brightened. He gave me that familiar boyish smile that always made me smile back.
But the closer I walked toward him, the quicker that smile died.
It vanished so abruptly that I faltered a bit, wondering what on earth changed in the span of a few
steps.
His eyes narrowed slightly, his lips pressed into a straight line, and before I could even greet him,
he stood and walked toward me.
“Who were you with?” he asked, tone firmer than usual.
He leaned in subtly, and to my confusion, I watched him sniff, as if trying to catch a scent off me.
“What do you mean?” I asked, completely puzzled.
Then… for the first time in all the years I had known him… he raised his voice at me.
“Don’t play dumb with me, Aria. Who were you with?”
He grabbed my arms suddenly, both hands clamping around me tightly, and I felt his fingers dig into my skin. His eyes shifted color instantly-darkening, sharpening-something wild bleeding
through them.
“Owen, what are you doing?”
I tried to pull back, but his grip only tightened.
Then a low, deep growl escaped his chest. A real, primal growl that made my heart stop for a

second.
This wasn’t him being angry.
This was something else entirely.
“I smell another male all over you,” he snarled. “Who was it?”
Clairy
The voice that came out of him wasn’t his. The tone was too guttural, too raw, too… animalistid.
That’s when it clicked.
It wasn’t Owen speaking to me anymore.
It was his wolf.
“No one, okay?” I said quickly. “It was just a stranger. I only showed him the coffee shop.”
He wasn’t convinced. The look in his eyes said he wasn’t even close.
“Then why is his scent so strong on you?” he growled again, grip tightening just a little more, enough to sting. “Tell me.”
“Owen, you’re hurting me,” I said, keeping my voice as calm as I could even though my pulse was
racing.
But the response I got wasn’t his.
“It’s Leon.”
Hearing that name-his wolf’s name, spoken out loud for the first time sent a shiver down my spine.
So he really wasn’t the one in control.
“Well, Leon,” I said carefully, meeting the wildness in his gaze, “let go of me… before I get mad.”
And just like that, almost instantly-he released me, stepping back as if my words had snapped him
out of something.
When he blinked again, the red faded from his eyes and they shifted back to normal, but he staggered a little as he pressed a hand to his head. I took a few steps toward him, but he stretched out his arm and muttered, “Stay back a bit.” It was his voice this time, his real voice and I stopped, watching him closely and wondering why he had even let his wolf take over like that.
He straightened slowly and looked at me with a troubled expression. “I’m sorry… I didn’t hurt you, did I?” he asked, sounding almost panicked, like he was wrestling with his wolf inside him.
“A bit,” I admitted, and the second I said it, a pained look crossed his face.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” I asked, feeling a little concerned now.
Clany
He let out a weak smile. “He’s speaking to me, and I don’t want to listen, so he’s trying to come out again,” he said, and I froze for a moment because I knew exactly who he meant.
“Well… you should come inside,” I suggested, but he shook his head immediately. “No. I don’t have
much time anymore,” he said, glancing down at his watch.
“I came here to tell you I’ll miss your birthday,” he added, and my face fell instantly. “What do you
mean by that?” I snapped, my voice rising without my permission. He took a small step back, lifting
his hands slightly like he didn’t want me getting more worked up.
“It’s my dad, Aria. I promise when I get back I’ll get you a good gift,” he said, and I narrowed my
eyes at him. “Well, you better. So how long will you be gone?”
“Just three months, Aria. It’s for training,” he said, and I nodded slowly, trying to accept it.
