When my father later came back from work, the house smelled faintly of the dinner I had prepared. Soon, my mother would also be home, but no matter what I did, I couldn’t take today’s events out of my mind. Owen’s sudden intensity, the way he had acted-it kept playing over and over. My father was the only one I felt I could talk to freely about things like this.
So, when I found him sitting in the living room, a book in hand, waiting for my mom so we could eat dinner together, I knew I had to speak up. I cleared my throat and called, “Dad.”
He looked up immediately, his warm eyes meeting mine. “What’s up, dear?”
I took a deep breath, sliding into the seat across from him. “Um… what does it mean when a male wolf sniffs the scent of an unmated female wolf?” My voice came out quieter than I expected,
almost hesitant.
He slowly set his book down, removing his glasses, and leaned forward, his brows knitting with curiosity. “What do you mean by that?”
“Well… I wouldn’t say he smelled me, per se… but he smelled someone on me,” I admitted. I didn’t have to say who it was; my father already understood.
“Did you tell anyone else besides me?” he asked, his eyes narrowing slightly in concern. I shook my
head.
He sighed, leaning back and putting his glasses back on. “It could be because he’s the future alpha, you know. Those kinds of wolves… they have special abilities, heightened senses. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything personal.”
He sounded calm, composed, and rational, but I knew my father well enough to understand that he had a way of masking his real emotions, and he was in deep thoughts. Still, I forced myself to trust him. Owen couldn’t be my mate right… no, it wasn’t possible. I must be overthinking everything.
Besides he’s betrothed, that much I know.
And then the day finally came. My birthday.
I woke to the soft buzz of my phone. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Owen’s name flashing on the screen. Excitement surged through me, and without a second thought, I answered.
“Someone’s birthday is today,” he said, his voice warm, teasing, and somehow familiar.

I laughed, unable to hide my happiness. “It pains me you won’t be here,” I admitted, pouting softly The memory of the cheek kiss lingered at the edge of my mind-it was as if nothing had ever happened, yet I couldn’t shake the flutter in my chest.
“It pains me more, Aria… oh, I gotta go,” he said suddenly, his tone rushed and clipped. He must have been busy.
“Okay… call you later then. Bye,” I replied, my voice trying to hide the disappointment.
“Bye,” he said, and the line went dead. I held the phone a little longer, smiling despite myself.
After freshening up, I went downstairs to find my parents waiting with a beautifully decorated
cake, with a happy birthday dear. I know when night falls I will shift for the first time. I had heard the stories about how excruciating it could be, how it could tear through your body and mind, and yet, despite the fear, I was determined. I had to know. I had to become the wolf I was meant to be
Calls and messages of birthday wishes poured in-Suzy, Benson, and all of our friends. Each word, each voice, made the anticipation grow, and by the time night came, it felt like the air itself was
alive with tension.
My father led me to the woods, the world bathed in the silver light of the full moon. The trees swayed gently, whispering in the night wind. The ground beneath my legs felt firm, grounding me, even as my heartbeat raced with anxiety. We waited in silence until exactly 11:50. My father looked at me, his eyes calm but filled with pride.
“Soon, Aria… you will become a woman and discover who your mate is. This is the next step of your life,” he said softly, the weight of his words grounding me even as excitement and fear
churned in my stomach.
I smiled at him, pride swelling inside me, though my hands trembled slightly. I was ready-or at least, I thought I was.
As the clock struck twelve, the moon reached its zenith, bathing the clearing in pale, ethereal light. A strange warmth began to ripple through my body, subtle at first, teasing. My senses sharpened, every rustle of the leaves and distant howl magnified, and a shiver ran down my spine. And then, without warning, snap.
My bones began to crack and reshape violently, sending jolts of agony through every fiber of my being. A scream tore from my lips, raw and primal, echoing through the forest. I fell to the ground, writhing as my muscles tore, stretched, and reformed. The pain was unlike anything I had ever experienced-my human form breaking apart and my true form emerging.
My father immediately turned his back, giving me the privacy I needed, though I could sense his presence, steady and unwavering. Every nerve in my body was alight with fire, every breath a
