He went home, and I was excited-so excited that I prepared several different dishes. I couldn’t help

it; I was really happy. Who wouldn’t be, when the person you love loves you right back?

When my father got home he kept watching me with a smile, amused by how I was behaving.

“Did something good happen?” he asked. I shook my head quickly, and he laughed.

“Seriously, Aria, you’ve really come a long way,” he said as he sat down to eat. “Tell me, won’t you go

to the pack square tomorrow? The unmated will be there. You’re not getting any younger.”

He was genuinely concerned, and his words made my guilt twist inside me.

Keeping the truth that Owen was my mate from him was already eating at me, so I just nodded.

“Okay, Father. I’ll go to the pack square tomorrow.”

He smiled, and I smiled too, even though it made me feel worse.

The next day came, and as he wished, I went to the pack square so he wouldn’t worry. Then my phone rang. Owen.

I smiled instantly-he hadn’t called me that morning and I picked up. But the moment he spoke,

something in his voice caught my attention. It didn’t sound like him at all.

“Um… Aria, will you be available this evening?” he asked. There was no excitement, no

warmth-nothing like before.

“Yes, I will be. Is everything alright?” I asked. On his end, it went quiet. The silence made me sit up

straighter, anxiety crawling through me. When he finally spoke again, he said,

“Yes, everything is alright. I just wanted to see you today, that’s all.”

That only made me more unsettled.

“Okay… we’ll see at our usual spot this evening,” I replied, feeling anxious for reasons I couldn’t

understand.

“Yeah,” he said, and hung up.

His father must have forced him into something again. Anytime he argued with the alpha, Owen always sounded like this-off, withdrawn.

All through the day, his strange tone replayed in my head, and I found myself wanting to see him

badly, just to know what was wrong.

When evening finally came, I went to our spot. He was already there, sitting on the bench with his head bowed. But the moment he caught my scent, he stood up quickly, and when he saw me, he

smiled.

I rushed toward him, and he pulled me into his arms immediately, hugging me tightly, burying his face in my hair. I tried to pull back a little so I could see his expression, but he whispered,

“Let’s just stay like this.”

So I stayed. We stood there wrapped around each other, and I could feel his emotions through the bond-messy, conflicted, heavy. Nothing felt right about it.

His heart was beating so fast it felt like it could burst out of his chest.

Only after his emotions settled did he finally pull away-and before I could even say a word, his

mouth crashed onto mine in a kiss.

The kiss was rushed and desperate, his mouth moving over mine with a hunger that felt almost frantic. His tongue explored mine, claiming, owning-like he couldn’t get enough of me.

My fingers tangled in his hair, and honestly, if anyone saw the way he was kissing me, they’d never believe we had already slept together just yesterday. It was as if he was craving me all over again,

and I let him-I drank every bit of him in.

He didn’t seem like someone who had a problem. Not with the way he was kissing me.

When he finally pulled away, both of us were breathless, struggling for air.

“Is something wrong?” I asked again. Everything inside me whispered that something wasn’t right.

But he shook his head.

“No. I’m sorry,” he said, and I was quite confused on why he was apologizing to me but didn’t take it

to heart.

I searched his face for answers, but he hid his emotions too well.

So I nodded slowly, pretending I understood. He pulled me into another embrace, burying his face

against my neck, inhaling me like he needed the scent to stay alive. He was unusually clingy today,

holding onto me tightly-so I wrapped my arms around him too.

If he was depressed and didn’t want to talk yet, I wouldn’t force it. I knew Owen. By tomorrow, he’d

come around and open up.

So we just stayed there, holding each other.

When it was finally time to leave, he still looked like he didn’t want to let me go. And even though t tried to act like the stronger one, I was worried-deeply worried.

That night, I couldn’t sleep. I tossed and turned, unable to shake the uneasiness pooling in my stomach. He hadn’t told me what was bothering him, and on top of that, my wolf wouldn’t settle.

I tried talking to Dee, but she didn’t respond. It was like even she couldn’t figure out what was

wrong.

Eventually, after a long struggle, I drifted off. And when I woke up, the sun was already high.

I checked the time-past ten in the morning.

I sat up quickly, startled-and nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw someone sitting in my room.

“Oh my God-Dad!” I gasped, pressing a hand to my chest.

“Sorry, honey, I didn’t mean to scare you,” he said gently, a newspaper in his hand, lines on his face

sharper than usual.

“Okay, I get it, but why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?” I asked, rubbing my eyes.

“You… didn’t know?” he asked, and my confusion deepened.

Know what?

He handed me the newspaper without a word. I took it, scanning the front page once… twice…

three times. But nothing made sense.

I laughed weakly. “Is this one of those ridiculous rumor articles?” I joked, lifting my eyes to him.

The look on his face wasn’t joking.

My smile disappeared instantly.

Heart pounding, I looked back at the headline.

Bold letters screamed at me:

“THE FUTURE ALPHA OWEN TIES THE KNOT WITH HIS MATE LAST NIGHT, ALPHA FAMILY

CONFIRMS.”

My eyes widened.

No.

No, it couldn’t be.

My hands shook. The words blurred. My vision swam.
