Side Story 10-1
Aria
After hours of panicking in the living room I took my phone immediately, hands shaking so badly almost dropped it. I dialed Owen’s number for the hundredth of times, pressing it against my ear like my life depended on hearing his voice. But it didn’t go through, it was like it was never there. I tried again. And again. And again. Each time it didn’t go through, something inside me sank deeper until the pressure in my chest felt like a weight dragging me down.
My parents were hovering behind me, exchanging worried glances, but none of their concern could pierce through the panic building inside me. If he didn’t pick up… if he didn’t say something… if he didn’t tell me this was a joke or a misunderstanding, then I was going straight to the Alpha’s mansion to demand answers. This couldn’t be real. It couldn’t.
The front door burst open, slamming into the wall as Suzy rushed in like she had run all the way from town. Her face was blotchy, her breathing uneven. Everything about her screamed urgency, but I couldn’t see her clearly. My mind was fogged.
“Aria, I saw-” she started, voice trembling.
“I don’t want to hear it,” I cut in sharply, shaking my head so hard my vision blurred. “It’s a rumor. I know it is.” I said it with certainty I didn’t feel-but she only stared at me with wet eyes and shook
her head.
“Aria… I called Benson. It’s true,” she whispered, like she was afraid the words themselves might
break me.
Oh Benson, If Owen wouldn’t pick up, then yes… Benson. He always answered.
I grabbed my phone again with trembling fingers and dialed him. He picked up on the first ring as if he had been holding the phone in his hand, waiting.
“Aria… how are you holding up?” he breathed, voice tight. “I swear if I see that bastard I’ll punch
him.”
My heart stopped. “Tell me it’s not true… please,” I begged, clinging to that one thin thread of hope.
Silence. A long, suffocating silence in which I didn’t breathe at all. Then his voice came again, low, defeated, almost apologetic.
“It’s true. He’s married. He did so last night.”
The phone slid out of my hand before I even realized I’d let go. It hit the floor with a loud crack, the screen shattering into pieces just like I felt my heart shatter inside me.

My father stepped closer, placing his hands gently on my shoulders. “Aria… I understand, baby.
But he didn’t.

He didn’t understand that Owen hadn’t just broken my heart-he had shattered my mind, my soul,
every part of me I had ever shared with him.
