Book2:Chapter 2

The very next Monday, I went over to the company. I submitted all the credentials they had requested, and after a few minutes, I was handed a company pass. Holding it in my hand made
everything feel official-and terrifying at the same time.

Not long after, a woman who looked to be in her early thirties approached me. She was well put
together, her expression professional and unreadable.
“Miss Williams, this way,” she said, gesturing politely.
I followed her to the elevator, my heart already beating faster than normal. The moment we stepped inside, she pressed the button for the first floor, and my eyes widened instantly.
The first floor-if I remembered correctly-was strictly reserved for the CEOs. Maybe the CFO’s
office is on the first floor too.
My throat tightened as the elevator doors slid shut and began to move. I swallowed hard, trying to
steady myself.
I hoped-no, I needed-to make a very good first impression on my boss. I had dressed my best for this moment: a deep blue suit, neatly tailored, with a fitted coat and matching pants. I wanted to look professional, capable… like I deserved to be here.
When the elevator doors opened, we stepped out. The woman turned to face me, her expression
completely blank.
“Sit there for a while. I’ll come back for you,” she said and turned to leave.
I nodded and walked over to take a seat.
Almost immediately, a strange feeling washed over me. Damn… why did it suddenly feel so
suffocating?
I hadn’t felt like this even on the first day of my very first job. But this was different. Heavy.
Unsettling. Like the air itself had changed.
I had barely settled into the chair when the door suddenly burst open with a loud bang. I jerked up
instinctively as a man stepped out-and my eyes landed on him.
He looked like the kind of man you don’t see every day. The kind who commands attention the
moment he enters a room without saying a word.
He radiated money. Power. Authority.

Book2 Chapter 2
Someone like Marilyn’s ex, Jax… or maybe even more intimidating.

Slowly, I stood up, my eyes locked on his without even realizing it. But why the hell was he staring
at me like that?
“Human?” he said, his chest heaving slightly.
I frowned inwardly.
Well… aren’t we all?
Just then, the woman from earlier rushed in, her eyes widening in alarm.
“Sir,” she called out.
But the man she addressed didn’t respond. He didn’t even look away from me.
This was awkward. Please don’t tell me I was about to lose the job on the very first day I got it.
“I-I’m sorry,” I said nervously. “Did I do something wrong?”
The woman turned to look at me, and all the color drained from her face. She shook her head
quickly, as if denying something she couldn’t explain.
Then, just as suddenly as he had appeared, the man turned and walked away.
The woman closed her eyes briefly, took a slow breath, then opened them again.
I bit down on my lower lip as I watched her expression change when she looked at me.
“Please, sit back down, ma’am. I’ll be back,” she said, leaving again.
Slowly, I lowered myself into the chair.
What the hell was that about? And why had she suddenly changed from Miss Williams to ma’am?
All I knew was that I couldn’t lose this job. Not now.
About ten minutes later, she returned.
“This way. I’ll show you to your desk,” she said as if nothing had happened earlier.
I let out a quiet sigh of relief and followed her, I guess I’ll be keeping the job.
She showed me around the office, pointing out a few things. “I’ll send someone over to brief you
on the schedule of Mr. Chester-the boss you’ll be working for, the CEO of this company,” she
added.
I swallowed immediately and nodded, though my brows creased slightly.

I hadn’t applied to be the CEO’s secretary. I had applied for the position of secretary to the CFO/So
why the sudden change?
Still, I didn’t ask any questions. I really needed this job, and whatever changes they had made didn’t
matter-as long as I kept it.
She suddenly stopped and turned to face me.
“The man you saw a few minutes ago,” she said quietly, “that’s the CEO.”
I froze.
Don’t tell me it was that weird man.
And don’t tell me he was Mr. Julio Chester.
I later came to understand that I wasn’t stepping into an empty role or replacing anyone. He
already had two secretaries.
And somehow, he had decided to make me the third.
That realization left me unsettled. If two people were already handling his work, then why bring in
another? What exactly had made him look at me and decide I was necessary? The question sat uncomfortably in my mind, but I pushed it aside. Overthinking wouldn’t help me survive my first
day.
Not long after, two people approached my desk, and it didn’t take much to figure out who they were. The way they moved, confident and familiar with the space, told me they’d been here for
long.
“These must be them,” I thought.
“Well, this is new, I wasn’t expecting it,” the man said, his tone carrying a mild surprise as he
stopped in front of me. He stretched out his hand. I quickly stood and shook it.
“Hi, I’m Eliot Barn,” he said with an easy smile.
“Idara Williams,” I replied.
He nodded approvingly before I glanced at the woman beside him. She had her arms folded tightly
across her chest, her expression closed off, almost defensive.
“Faye,” she introduced herself flatly, offering nothing more-not even a last name.
