Book 2 Chapter 5

Book 2:Chapter 5
Idara
“Y-your… your eyes,” I whispered, taking a step back.
Fear wrapped tightly around my chest, squeezing the breath out of me.
He didn’t answer. Instead, he turned his head toward the door. I followed his gaze instinctively, my
heart hammering wildly.
God, I want to run.
My mind was a mess, panic, confusion, dread-everything crashing into each other at once. And just then, the door opened.
How did he even know someone was coming?
This time, it wasn’t anyone I recognized.
A woman stepped inside. She had short hair, sharp eyes, and wore a fitted suit that screamed authority. She was tall, composed, professional-the kind of woman who looked like she always
knew what was going on.
“I guess this is her,” she said calmly, directing her words to Mr. Chester.
He turned to look at me again.
My stomach dropped.
Were they part of some cult?
And was I the sacrifice?
A thousand thoughts rushed through my head all at once.
“I almost lost it,” Mr. Chester said to the woman, his eyes never leaving mine.
Then he added, casually, “I never knew I liked them cute.”
I froze.
Excuse me?
“It will be hard for you to understand,” the woman said calmly.
I dragged my gaze to her as she extended her hand.
“I know my brother can be very forward-and a little weird,” she added lightly. “I’m Danae Chester.”

Book 2 Chapter 5
She held her hand out for a handshake.
Of course I didn’t take it.

At that moment, I didn’t want explanations, names, or introductions. I just wanted to get the hell
out of there.
“I just want to leave,” I said, my voice tight.
She immediately stepped closer to me.
“Then let’s leave,” she offered.
Relief washed over me. Anything was better than remaining in his presence.
I refused to look back at him as we walked out. Still, I could feel his gaze burning into my back-
silent, heavy, watching. He didn’t say a word.
Once we were outside the office, I leaned closer and whispered, “His eyes changed color.”
She chuckled softly.
That didn’t help. At all.
“I know you’re scared right now,” she said gently, “but in time, you’ll understand why he wants you
near him.”
I snapped my head toward her.
“And why does the CEO want to be near me?” I asked, frowning deeply.
She was strange too-maybe even stranger than him.
From the way she introduced herself, I got somehow confused because what I know correctly is that I had never once heard anyone mention that Mr. Chester even had a sister.
“The only thing I can tell you, Missy,” she said slowly, “is that there’s more than meets the eye.”
She paused, then added quietly, “From now on, the things you think aren’t normal… will become
your new normal.”
We suddenly stopped walking. She turned to me and smiled.
“Go back to work,” she said. “And don’t think too much about what happened in his office.”
I didn’t respond.
I turned around immediately and walked away, my legs carrying me faster than normal-my heart
pounding, my thoughts spiraling.

Book 2 Chapter 5
Julio
What was I thinking? Damn it-I scared her, my face twisted in frustration.
But then I heard Danae’s footsteps approaching and immediately knew what was coming, just
from the way she walked, I knew I was about to get the worst scolding of my life.
She entered the office, and when I looked at her, I lifted both hands in surrender.
“Seriously, Julio. What did we talk about?” she said, hands on her hips.
Clam
I hissed in frustration. “You know I tried, Danae. Fuck-I’ve been trying,” I said, my irritation spilling.
out.
“I know you can’t fully control it,” she replied, “but you have to. She’s human. Of course she’ll be
scared and weirded out. And you know very well we need to fix a lot of mess before you finally
claim her.”
I understood what she was saying, but it didn’t change anything. I couldn’t stop myself. She was
my mate.
“I know, okay?” I said. “The problems on the ground won’t end anytime soon, so there’s no reason
for me to stay away from her.”
Danae sighed. “Julio, you know the council wants you to marry Eleanor. They think she’s the best match for you. If you don’t want your mate dragged into trouble, you need to prove to them that
you’re capable of ruling and making your own decisions.”
That was enough.
I slammed my hand against the desk and snapped my head toward her, but she remained calm.
“Well, fuck the council,” I growled, my voice harsher than I intended.
I carry a name that was never meant to be mine, a life that was never supposed to be mine-and
now they want me to give up my mate too? Never. From the moment I scented her and lost
control, all I’ve wanted was to be near her.
Julio Chester, they say. Don’t make me laugh.
If that fool hadn’t died, I wouldn’t be forced to take his place and live his life. Helio doesn’t exist
anymore, that I know.
