Book 2:Chapter 6

Throughout the entire workday, my mind was in turmoil. I couldn’t focus on anything. What happened in his office kept replaying in my head. I’m not sure he’s even human-do normal people’s eyes change color like that?

I’m seriously considering quitting before they fire me, but I desperately need the paycheck. The

last thing I want is to add more worry to my mom’s plate; she’s already stressed enough about me.

Now a pounding headache is setting in. As soon as the clock hit closing time, I stood up quickly.

“Hey, want to head out together?” Eliot called out. I plastered a smile on my face, but then I

remembered the CEO-he clearly doesn’t like me being around Eliot. Why is that?

We left the building side by side anyway. “I can give you a ride home if you’d like,” he offered kindly.

My eyes widened in surprise, but for some reason I just shook my head. “No… thanks, I’ll manage on my own,” I replied quickly. He nodded understandingly. “Alright then, get home safe,” he said

with a warm smile that I returned before he headed for the parking lot and I went over to flag down

a cab.

When I stepped through the door, Mom was in the kitchen, and the aroma was wonderful. “Something smells amazing,” I said. She turned with a bright smile. “There’s my girl! How was work today?” The question brought everything that had happened at work today rushing back. “Great,” I answered automatically. She glanced at me sharply.

“Just great? You seem off-is something bothering you at the office?” She set down her dish towel. I shook my head vigorously, forcing another smile. “No, Mom, it’s the usual routine, nothing new.” I let out a sigh. She nodded and smiled back. “That’s good to hear, Idara. For a moment I thought trouble has a way of finding you wherever you go, and you might need a little divine help,” she teased lightly. I laughed, though it came out shaky-she wasn’t entirely wrong. “Go wash up and come down for dinner,” she added, and I rushed upstairs to my room.

Later that night, I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, wondering if my life had truly progressed from

where it once was.

I have to be honest with myself: the only life I really knew was the one I shared with Marilyn. How did I even become her friend in the first place? Still, maybe everything happens for a reason. This new beginning is giving me a chance to stand on my own.

I yawned, rolled onto my side, and tried to drift off. I needed to wake up early tomorrow to avoid

being late for work.

I don’t know how long I’d been asleep-probably not very long-when suddenly I couldn’t move. Paralysed in bed, I lay perfectly still, fearing if I moved, something bad would happen to me.

Someone was in my room. And that someone was gently stroking my hair.

Claird

Who was it? A burglar? If that’s all it was, he could just take whatever he wanted and leave me

alone. Or worse-a r****t? God, no. Was that why he was running his fingers through my hair like that? Who the hell had broken into my room?

Then a deep, soothing voice-the one I’d heard earlier that day-cut through the darkness. “I know

you’re awake.”

I bolted upright in bed. My eyes flew wide open as I made out his silhouette: Mr. Chester. Or Julio,

as he’d insisted I call him.

Pure panic rooted me to the spot. I couldn’t even scream. He was still dressed in the same suit

from the office; it didn’t look like he’d been home at all.

But the real questions burned in my mind: What was he doing here? How did he even know where I

lived? And how had he gotten inside my room without a sound?

“Idara, you’re trembling,” he murmured softly.

Of course I was-who wouldn’t be? He moved closer, and I just sat there frozen, barely able to breathe. The memory of his eyes shifting color earlier flooded back. I hadn’t imagined it. Was he…

some kind of spirit? A ghost?

“I couldn’t stop myself. I had to come,” he confessed, his voice low. He was near now, but he wasn’t touching me. I knew I should scream, wake my mom-but my body wouldn’t obey.

Somehow, I forced the words out in a shaky whisper that he heard clearly anyway. “What are your doing here?”

“I don’t know exactly,” he replied, his gaze locked on mine. “But Riley is desperate to mark you, and I

can’t fight it.”

There it was again-that strange talk that made no sense. Then, without warning, he leaned in, his

face inches from mine.

The room was pitch black, so I could barely see his features. “Your scent,” he breathed heavily, “it’s

overwhelming.” His head dipped slightly, his breaths coming faster, more ragged.

I don’t know what possessed me, but my hand reached up to touch his shoulder. “Do you… need help?” I whispered. Idiot-why was I trying to comfort an intruder instead of fleeing?

“I want to mark you,” he growled, his voice turning rough, almost animal-like. I yanked my hand

away instantly.

He lifted his head again, meeting my eyes. Even in the darkness, I swore I saw sharp fangs protruding from his lips, like some wild beast. And his eyes-they were glowing faintly.

Terror gripped me so hard I thought I might lose control of my bladder. I had to be hallucinating

This couldn’t be real–it had to be a nightmare.

Before I could let out a scream, his hand clamped firmly over my mouth. He pushed me back down

onto the bed. My vision blurred with fear; tears welled up as I realized this was no dream. He

straddled me, keeping that hand in place to stifle any cry for help.

“I’m sorry,” he rasped, his voice strained. “I can’t control it anymore. I have to mark you. I’m so

sorry.”

He tilted my head to the side with the same hand, his lips brushing against my neck.

Was this how I was going to die? Murdered in my own bed?

His mouth pressed against my skin, warm at first, then his tongue traced lightly over it. What the
