Book 2:Chapter 10-1
Julio / Helio
The moment I stepped into the house, barely past the door, Julian came running toward me.
“Dad! You’re back!”
Clain
A smile came to my face instantly as he threw himself into my arms. I caught him easily and held
him close.
“Did
you miss me that much?” I asked, pressing a kiss to his cheek. He laughed, bright and
carefree-the only real light in this house, a stark contrast to his mother.
“Yes! I missed you so, so much,” he said, stretching his arms wide to show just how much. I let out
a quiet chuckle.
I wondered, not for the first time, what would happen when he finally learned the truth-that his
whole life had been built on a lie. I pushed the thought away. There was no avoiding it forever,
though. One way or another, every one of us had tasted bitterness because of the council.
Maybe that was why I didn’t fully blame Violet-my sister-in-law.
As I carried Julian through the living room, Violet descended the glass staircase. Her eyes met
mine, and for Julian’s sake, she forced a small smile.
“Come down, Julian. Let Daddy go freshen up,” she said.
Julian shook his head immediately and tightened his arms around my neck.
“No. I want to stay with Daddy,” he said, resting his head on my shoulder.
“Julian, come down,” she repeated as she reached us.
His grip tightened even more.
“Just leave him,” I said calmly. “I don’t need to rest.”
Her eyes flashed-sharp, dangerous.
“He’s my son,” she snapped. “I’ll tell him what to do.”
The smile vanished from her face the moment Julian wasn’t looking.
“No,” Julian whispered.
I closed my eyes briefly, then opened them again.
“Go to Mom for now, okay?” I said gently not wanting her trouble.

Book 2 Chapter 10-1
He lifted his head, pouting.
“No. I love Daddy more. I don’t want to go.”
That was it. No one could resist that face.
I smiled at him, then looked back at Violet, who now stood with her arms crossed.
“I said, Julian, come down this minute,” she barked.
I didn’t like her tone. Not one bit.
“If the boy says no,” I said, my voice turning firm, “you’ll leave him be.”
Her eyes widened.
I didn’t wait for her reply. With Julian still in my arms, I walked toward the stairs.
“You’re spoiling him,” she followed behind me. “And he’s my son.”
She kept repeating it as we reached the hallway, then rushed ahead and stood in my path.
“Give me back my child,” she demanded, venom filling her eyes.
I stepped closer, my anger simmering just beneath the surface.
“Move.”
She did.
No argument. No resistance.
I carried Julian into my room and shut the door behind us.
He grinned up at me.
“Are we going to play Scrabble?” he asked.
I chuckled softly.
What I didn’t know then was that Violet hadn’t stepped aside because she wanted to.
Idara
I didn’t wake him up that night. After whatever that strange heat was, had finally faded, he slept deeply on my bed, as if nothing in the world could disturb him.
Clam
He looked… peaceful. Nothing like the hardened, intimidating man I had seen before. I circled to the other side of the bed and slowly lay down, my body stiff at first, my thoughts screaming at me.
I should have called the police.
