Book 2:Chapter 10-2
He was still there.
The alarm hadn’t even stirred him.
Clair
I rushed to gather my work clothes, placed it on my chair and headed into the bathroom. When I came back, he was still asleep, breathing slow and steady. I really should wake him up now.
Instead, I moved to the mirror. I reached into the drawer for my makeup kit-and then I froze.
My eyes widened.
I should have checked this yesterday.
It wasn’t a deep bite mark like I’d assumed. Something else sat on my neck-faint, unfamiliar, and impossible to understand. I stared at it, my mind scrambling to make sense of what I was seeing.
I heard him shift on the bed, but I didn’t turn. I couldn’t. My eyes stayed locked on my reflection.
“What did you do?” I snapped, spinning around to face him.
Everything that followed happened too fast-my mother knocking, the panic, the half-lies. But one thing was clear: I needed answers. Answers about what he had done yesterday… and about whatever this thing was now etched into my skin.
The worst part of the morning?
He had slipped through my window.
My room was at the top of the house, yet he jumped down like it was nothing-landing on his feet as if gravity meant nothing to him.
That was when it truly sank in.
He wasn’t human.
And now, as I sat at my desk later that day, staring blankly at my computer screen, I found myself
doing something even more dangerous-
I was considering going to see him.
He hadn’t shown up at the office until a little after one today. Obviously.
I needed answers from him. He owed me that much, at the very least.
The office phone rang, sharp and sudden. I picked it up.
“Come down to my office.”

Book 2 Chapter 10-2
My eyes widened instantly. It was Mr. Chester.
Clair
For a second, I thought he would hang up immediately after speaking, but he didn’t-so I forced
out, “Okay,” and ended the call myself.
I stood up at once.
“Someone’s going to pee again,” Faye joked, her tone light and irritating.
Eliot shot her a warning look, but I didn’t respond to either of them. I simply started for the door
and walked out of the office.
I had far more important issues to deal with than trading words with someone who clearly enjoyed
running her mouth.
The walk to his office felt longer than usual. Each step tightened the knot in my chest until I finally
stood in front of his door.
I knocked-though considering how far his desk was from the entrance, I doubted he’d even hear
The door opened immediately.
He was right there.
“Come in,” he said, holding my gaze as I walked past him. I felt it when he inhaled deeply, but I ignored it and continued inside.
That was when I noticed her.
Standing near his desk was his sister, Danae. The moment she saw me, her lips curved into a
smile.
“You look radiant today,” she said warmly.
I had wanted to speak to him alone-not with his sister present.
Danae stepped closer, her eyes dropping to my neck where the scarf I had wrapped to cover my
neck was. “Can I see?” she asked gently.
I frowned and shifted my gaze to him instead.
So he must have told her. About what he did last night.
Without another word, I reached up and pulled the scarf away. “Can you please tell me what the
hell this is?” I demanded, my voice steady despite everything twisting inside me.
Danae’s lips curved into a knowing smile as she glanced up at Mr. Chester. “Well,” she said calmly,”
