Book 2:Chapter 12-2
When the transformation finished, a massive brown wolf stood where Mr. Chester had been
moments before.
Thick, glossy fur the color of dark chocolate caught the light, promising warmth and wildness. His
eyes-those same impossible purple eyes-locked onto mine, glowing faintly. Long, deadly fangs
glinted as his lips pulled back slightly, not in threat, but in something almost like recognition.
This was Riley.
The one who had bitten me last night.
The one who had claimed me in the dark.
The wolf standing before me had to be the Riley he speaks of. So they hadn’t been lying after all- they truly weren’t human. I frowned slightly as he remained still, watching me. Was Mr. Chester still
in there somewhere, buried beneath all of this?
Then, slowly, he began to move toward me.
For someone in wolf form, he was tall-almost my height-which only made his presence more overwhelming. He stopped just inches away, his massive face level with mine. Warm breath fanned across my skin, and before I could say a word, his tongue swept across my cheek.
I nearly panicked. You’ll ruin my makeup, you idiot.
Clearly, he didn’t care.
I met his gaze, my body betraying me as that same unfamiliar pull curled low in my stomach. I had to remind myself-firmly-that this was an animal. A wolf.
“So this is Riley,” I said aloud.
He licked me again, as if answering.
I sighed and glanced at the mess on the floor-discarded clothes, torn boxers. “Alright, I’ve seen enough. Can you change back now?”
He tilted his head, studying me.
Then he licked me again, slow and deliberate. I should have hated it.
I didn’t.
“Stop that,” I murmured, my voice coming out softer than I intended.

Book 2 Chapter 12-2
What he did next caught me completely off guard.
He suddenly lowered himself to the floor, lying down close to my feet. My eyes widened as he
rested his head down submissively.
Maybe he was trying not to frighten me. Or maybe it meant something else entirely.
“You’re not changing back?” I asked.
He closed his eyes.
That was clearly a no.
Strangely, I found him easier to tolerate like this-far more than Mr. Chester. And if I was being honest with myself, his thick fur was tempting me to do something reckless.
“Are you just going to stay there?” I asked.
He opened his eyes and lifted his head slightly.
Claim
Without really thinking, I walked over and sat down on the floor beside him. Standing was exhausting anyway. He shifted closer, pressing his body against mine, and I leaned back against
him instinctively.
Any other day, I would have run.
But today, for reasons I don’t know, I stayed.
He curled himself around me, careful and warm, then rested his massive head on my thigh-only part of its weight. My eyes widened.
“What are you doing?” I asked, confused, though a small smile crept onto my face.
He closed his eyes again.
Slowly, hesitantly, I reached out and ran my hand through his fur.
His breathing evened out, deep and content, as if he liked it.
And to my surprise, I realized something dangerous.
I might like Riley more than Mr. Chester.
He let out a low growl as my fingers continued to move through his fur, and only then did the thought finally hit me-what on earth was I doing? Why couldn’t I stop myself? No matter how much I argued with my own mind, my body refused to listen.
A man had just turned into a wolf right in front of me, and instead of running, I was here, stroking his head, feeling a warmth and comfort I had never known before.
