Book 2:Chapter 16-1

1dara

The moment I closed for the day, got home, greeted my mom and headed for my room, I went straight to my laptop. At least the internet should have something-anything at all.

I typed “are werewolves real?” into the search bar. At first, I scrolled through the results, but everything I saw was fiction or people discussing movies and books with that theme/None of it

gave me what I was looking for.

I searched for hours until night fell. If I couldn’t find anything useful online, then I might actually have to go to a library or something.

Just then, a knock sounded on my door, followed by my mother’s voice.

“Idara, the food is ready.”

I immediately closed my laptop. “Okay, Mom. I’ll be down in a bit,” I replied.

“Alright,” she said as she walked away.

I stood up, fixed my hair, and straightened my clothes. I couldn’t look like someone who had too much on her mind. Taking a deep breath, I headed out of my room and downstairs.

My mom was already seated at the dining table. When she saw me, she smiled.

“I’m sorry I didn’t help with the cooking,” I said apologetically.

She shook her head. “No need, Idara. You must be tired.”

I smiled and took the seat beside her.

She sighed lightly before asking, “So, anything new at work?”

I quickly shook my head as I served myself food. “Not really. Just that I’ve been given more work

lately than before,” I said-which was true. It wasn’t like when I had just been hired.

“Good,” she said with a smile.

I hesitated. Should I tell my mom about Mr. Chester? No-if I did, she would be devastated. I

shoved food into my mouth instead. Or maybe I could casually ask if she knew anything about

werewolves… but wouldn’t that sound strange?

“Is something wrong?” she asked, probably noticed the change in my mood.

I snapped my head up to look at her, inhaling slowly. Maybe I should just try my luck.

Book 2 Chapter 16-1

Clary

“Um…” I began, hesitating. “Mom, I heard something-like a rumor-at the office, and it’s been

bothering me.”

She set her fork down slowly. “And what is that?” she asked, her tone suddenly serious.

I braced myself. “Is it true that there are other beings in this town apart from, you know…/humans?”

I expected her to laugh, to brush it off like the absurd thing it sounded like. But instead, her eyes

stayed fixed on mine.

I swallowed as she spoke again. “Like what?”

I looked down at my food, then lifted my gaze back to her. “Something like… werewolves,” I said.

Her eyes widened, and she swallowed too. “And what rumor did you hear about them?” she asked,

and suddenly the air between us felt heavy, almost suffocating.

“That they live among us,” I replied.

She searched my face intently. “Is that all, Idara?” she asked.

I didn’t answer. I didn’t even nod.

“Idara,” she said softly, reaching for my hand, “you know you can tell me anything, right?”

The look on her face-her words, her tone-made it feel like she already knew they existed, like she

was urging me to say more.

“Do they exist, Mom?” I asked.
