I suppose this is the inevitable outcome when emotions that have long been buried finally claw their way to the surface.

For the better part of six years, my mind has worked tirelessly to shield me from the haunting memories of that fateful night. But now, standing once again at the very location where everything went wrong, it is no surprise that all those suppressed feelings and recollections are rushing back like a tidal wave.

Eventually, my tears subside, and as I lift my head, I realize we are no longer in the lobby. Instead, it appears we have been transported to a large, empty conference hall, its vastness echoing the silence that envelops us.

“I didn’t think you’d want people seeing you like that,” Samuel remarks, his voice breaking the stillness as I finally meet his gaze.

“You’d be right about that. Thank you, and I’m truly sorry about your shirt,” I reply, hastily wiping away the remnants of my tears. The embarrassment washes over me like a cold wave; I can hardly believe I allowed myself to break down in his arms.

“It’s not a problem, Natalie. Do you want to talk about what happened back there?” he inquires gently, his concern evident.

“Not particularly, no,” I respond with a weary sigh. I feel utterly drained—exhausted by the weight of lies and the burden of secrets. I’m simply tired of it all.

“However, I do need you to answer one question for me, and please, be honest,” I insist, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside.

“Of course, whatever you want, Natalie,” he assures me, his sincerity palpable.

“But that night, she drugged me. She dragged me to a room, leaving me alone and intoxicated, and then she hired a guy to come in and sleep with me. I woke up the next morning with only fragmented memories, unable to even recall the man’s face.”

“Before I could gather my thoughts or put on my clothes, my father and sister burst into the room. His face was a storm of anger and disappointment, and I turned to Yara for help, but she simply stoked the flames of his fury. That night, he kicked me out, leaving me with nowhere to go. I returned to the country to stay with one of my mother’s friends.”

“But a few weeks later, I discovered I was pregnant. I knew I would keep the baby; I had already lost so much in those months. I couldn’t bear to lose another life. Yet, I didn’t want to burden my mother’s friend, who had her own children to care for.”

“I went to a free clinic for an ultrasound, hoping for good news. But the universe had other plans; I wasn’t just having one baby—I was having four. Quads. How on earth was I supposed to manage four babies all on my own?”

“That night, I was filling out an application at an old diner in Silver Crest Pack to become a waitress when Yara walked in. She was so apologetic, and I confided in her about the babies. She promised to help me. Looking back now, I realize I shouldn’t have trusted her, but in that moment, I was desperate for support from my sister, my twin.”

“She rented an apartment for me, and five months later, I gave birth to the babies. I had the first two—a boy and a girl—but before I could hold them, Yara snatched them away from me. Then, in a horrifying act, she set the house on fire, leaving me to burn. I had to leap from the window to survive, and it was there, leaning against a tree, that I gave birth to the boys.”

I pause, wiping the tears streaming down my face, my heart aching with the weight of my story. “Yara took everything from me that night. I returned here seeking revenge and to reclaim my children, but I never expected to find you in the midst of all this.”

Finally, I look up at him, and the expression on his face is not what I had braced myself for. His eyes glisten with unshed tears, a mixture of guilt and shock flooding his features.
