“Natalie, you and I both understand that I had no part in those tragic deaths.” I assert, my voice steady, but as I meet her gaze, I can see the storm of confusion swirling in her eyes.
“Then how do you explain the DNA I discovered beneath Jeremy’s fingertips?” she counters, her voice a mixture of disbelief and determination. At that moment, a wave of confusion crashes over me.
“It must be some sort of error; you should run the tests again,” I urge her, desperation creeping into my tone.
“I’ve already run it three times, Samuel. You’re the only match,” she replies, her words hitting me like a physical blow.
“Then someone must be trying to frame me! Did you compare it against Steven’s DNA?” I press, my mind racing with possibilities.
“Yeah, there was only a 40% match, so it can’t be him,” she confirms, and I feel a flicker of hope.
“How high was my match?” I ask, my heart pounding in my chest.
“It was 89%,” she states, and I feel my stomach drop, the weight of that number settling heavily on my conscience.
“So, it’s possible that it isn’t me, that it could belong to another blood relative or sibling, correct?” I inquire, my voice barely above a whisper. She nods slowly, her expression serious.
“There’s no need to be scared, Natalie. I swear to you, I didn’t kill those people, but I think I know who did,” I confess, my heart racing with the revelation I’m about to share.
“Who is it?” she asks, her curiosity piqued, and I notice the tears have vanished from her eyes, replaced by a steely resolve.
I pull a stool closer and take a seat, the wood creaking beneath me. “My half-brother, Corey,” I reveal, watching as shock washes over her features, her eyes widening in disbelief.
“You have a half-brother?” she asks, her voice barely above a whisper. I let out a frustrated sigh, running my fingers through my hair, the weight of my family’s secrets pressing down on me.
The fight was set for that very night, with Alphas from far and wide gathering to witness the spectacle, having come for my father’s funeral. As the fight commenced, Corey landed a blow that knocked the wind from my lungs. We exchanged blows, and I managed to land a few decent hits, but he wasn’t going down. Then, he slashed me deeply along my side, and for a moment, I thought I was finished.
But then, an unfamiliar rage surged within me, unlike anything I had ever experienced before. What followed felt surreal, as if I was watching myself from outside my body. In an instant, I was shifting into a massive wolf, my fur as dark as ink, my fangs reminiscent of a saber-toothed tiger. With one powerful swipe of my paw, I knocked him to the ground, just as I was about to deliver a fatal blow, he surrendered.
I shifted back, and to my astonishment, the wound on my side had healed completely. The silence that enveloped the crowd was palpable; they stared at me, a mixture of awe and fear etched on their faces.
I told Corey that he was never to return, but in response, he warned me that this wasn’t the end. That was the last time I ever saw him.” I explain, the memories still fresh, tinged with a blend of pride and sorrow.
“I’m sorry you had to endure that at such a young age, Samuel,” she says softly, placing her hand atop mine, her touch warm and comforting.
“So you think this might be Corey?” she asks, her brow furrowing with concern.
“Unless my father had another child I’m unaware of, then yes, the DNA you found must belong to Corey. It makes perfect sense; of course, he’s involved in something like this,” I reply, frustration bubbling beneath the surface.
“Do you think he’s just involved, or is he the mastermind behind it all?” she presses, her eyes searching mine for answers.
