“I suppose that clears up the mystery of what I witnessed during my visit. It felt as if a heavy, ominous cloud had settled over the entire area,” I say, recalling the unsettling atmosphere. “Alpha Thomas mentioned renovations were in progress, but I can see through that lie. So, what’s truly going on?” I direct my inquiry toward him, feeling a growing sense of urgency.

“From my investigations, it appears the trouble began around four months ago. Alpha Thomas has poured millions into attempts to remedy the situation, yet nothing has improved,” he explains, and suddenly, a realization dawns on me.

“This explains why he was so eager to acquire the land I purchased from Alpha Killian. He’s contemplating relocating his pack, isn’t he?” I share this insight with Steven, who nods in agreement, his expression confirming my thoughts.

“Absolutely, that makes perfect sense. I hadn’t considered that angle before. However, the financial strain from trying to fix the land has left a significant mark on their resources. And then, to top it off, Alpha Thomas fell ill, which has nearly bankrupted them. I wouldn’t say they’re completely broke yet, but they’re dangerously close. Plus, with Alpha Thomas still unwell, their land situation shows no signs of improvement,” he elaborates, his brow furrowing with concern.

“How is it that no one is aware of this?” I probe, my curiosity piqued.

“I’m not sure. Every Alpha has their own pack to manage, and Alpha Thomas is notoriously proud and secretive. You and I both know he would never seek help, no matter how dire the situation,” Steven replies, a hint of frustration in his voice.

“That much is true,” I agree, the weight of the situation heavy on my mind.

“What would you like me to do next?” he asks, ready to assist.

“You’ve done an excellent job so far, Steven, but I need you to dig deeper. This entire situation feels off to me—first the land, then the Alpha’s health—it all seems interconnected. Look into potential enemies or any noteworthy incidents that may have occurred four months back,” I instruct him, and he nods, determination shining in his eyes as he grabs his tablet.

“Are the kids still asleep?” he inquires, glancing toward the hallway.

“Yeah, they are, but I expect they’ll wake up soon,” I reply, and he gives me a knowing look, one that suggests he’s about to change the subject.

“How are things going with Natalie?” he asks, a hint of curiosity lacing his tone.

“Things are good; she’s at her lab right now,” I say, sensing that he wants to probe further, but he seems to think better of it. He simply nods and exits the kitchen, leaving me to my thoughts.

As I prepare to open the fridge for the kids’ sandwiches, another thought strikes me.

Natalie arrived in town around four months ago—could she somehow be involved in all of this? She had mentioned having a plan for Yara, but she never brought up her father. Is it possible she’s orchestrating this chaos?

Just as I’m about to head out to confront her, I catch myself. She’s busy with her work, and my sudden appearance might come across as an accusation. No, I need to give it time; I’ll wait for the right moment.

The kids eventually stir from their slumber, and I set about preparing their sandwiches, pairing them with glasses of milk. Once they finish, the barrage of questions begins, and with Natalie absent, I do my best to soothe their curiosity and keep their spirits high.

My phone vibrates, pulling me from my thoughts. I glance down to see a text from Natalie: *I need you at the lab now.*

Her tone is urgent, and I quickly instruct Gavin to keep an eye on the kids before I leave the house. Grabbing one of the golf carts, I make my way to the lab, my heart racing with concern.

Upon arriving, I enter the building and head straight for the morgue, but she’s not there. Following her scent, I track her down to the lab.

The moment her gaze meets mine, I can sense something is terribly wrong. Fear flickers in her eyes, sending a chill down my spine.

“Natalie, what’s going on?” I ask, stepping closer, but she instinctively retreats, halting me in my tracks.

“Why, why did you do it?” she demands, tears brimming in her eyes, her voice trembling with accusation.

“Do what, Natalie? I don’t understand,” I reply, confusion clouding my mind.

“Why did you kill them and pretend like you were trying to find their killer?” she snaps, tears streaming down her face, leaving me utterly bewildered.

What in the world is she talking about?
