I couldn’t believe what I was hearing or what I was even seeing, I mean the expression on their faces, even on Sophia’s face, they were angry and sad at the same time.

“No, don’t say that. What if your mommy has her reasons?” I tried to explain to them. “There’s no mother in this world who does not love her child. She would feel extremely hurt if she heard what you just said.” I was a mother myself and I truly believed that there had time be a good reason why their mother wasn’t here with them.

“I’m sure that your mummy loves you and if she could be here she would.” I say to them.

But Sophia just shook her head and Franklin did the same and sneered. “That woman does not love us at all! She just wants to fulfill her celebrity dream. She’s using me and Sophia to gain favor with Daddy!” He screamed.

“No, don’t say that Franklin, that can’t be true.” I tell him.

He looks at me with tears in his eyes. It is the truth Natalie, I’m not lying, I heard her on the phone one day and she said that she was going to use us to get to our dad.” He tells me and I couldn’t believe it but at the same time it was clear that he was telling the truth.

I mean what kind of a woman would do something like that? How could she abandon these perfect

children?

“Come on, come here.” I tell them as I sit on the floor and the both of them make their way over to me and I give them a hug.

With both of them in my arms, I feel a tug in chest. No, that’s not possible, it can’t be. But it is and it’s there. This is the same feeling and tug that I get in my chest, that’s how I know that my children are still alive. So why do I feel like this now?

No, I must just be confusing myself, there’s no way Sophia and Franklin are my kids, I just want them to be, but they aren’t mine.

It’s just so sad and also infuriating that the mother of the children treated them as bargaining chips to marry into the Bowers family. No wonder they resented her so much.

“I could stay in contact with you guys. I can even promise to visit as frequently as I can.” I say with a determined voice because I meant every word that I said. “But I can’t promise the rest,” I concluded.

Although I adored the twins from the Bowers family, I could not just take care of them because of my liking toward them. Not only would their mother oppose, but their father, Samuel, would do the same as well. Plus I couldn’t let them get attached to me, because once I found my children I was going to leave and that would break their hearts and that was the last thing that I wanted.

The atmosphere in the room immediately took a turn. The originally cheerful children looked like deflated balloons. I get that they were sad, but I wasn’t going to make false promises just so they would be happy.

Just then, Samuel returned with a glass of warm water in his hands. I took it from him and asked Franklin to drink a few sips. After that, I put the two children to bed with the reasoning that Franklin needed more

rest.

Despite my decision not to move in, it was clear by thr smile on their faces that they still adored me and when I told them to go to bed, they did as I said, but then they asked me to sing them a lullaby which I obliged.

I stayed by their side and I sang a lullaby that my mother always sang to me when I was sad and it always made me feel better. I continued singing until they eventually fell asleep. I made sure that they were well covered up and then I placed kissed on their foreheads.

“Sleep well little ones.” I whisper to them and that tug was still there, but I chose to ignore it, I was just wishing they were my kids, I was confusing myself.

I looked at my watch and it was already midnight which meant that there was no way I was going home tonight.

Feeling tired, I massaged my stiff neck as I exited the children’s bedroom.

I looked up and I just realised that Samuel had stayed with me the entire time while I was pacifying the children.

“Thanks,” he stated as soon as we were face to face and he had a look in his eyes that I couldn’t decipher.

“You sing better than you tell stories.” He tells me.

“it’s that a compliment?” I ask him.

“It’s an observation.” He says.

Without the presence of the two children, it was time to call him out. “Alpha Bowers, it’s unlike you to call for me even when you knew that the children were faking it.”

I expect him to look shocked but he isn’t, he looks impressed. “How did you know that I’ve known all along?”

“You’re always putting up a front in front of Franklin. You actually care for him a lot. Yet, you appeared to be unusually calm when he was supposedly sick today,” I explained.

I lifted my gaze to meet his eyes. “I told you that Franklin only needed to drink warm water to soothe his stomachache, and you didn’t question it at all.”

He just hummed in response.

I thought that he would at least try to explain himself. I did not expect him to admit it so easily.

“You did it on purpose?”

“The children wanted to see you, and I wanted to see you, too.” He answered. His eyes were unreadable. “If you think that I did it on purpose, then I won’t deny it.”

My eyes widened at his words, he wanted to see me? This man is so confusing.

Deep inside, I kept telling myself that I was just imagining things or maybe I didn’t hear him well.

Since when did he start speaking like this to me? I must be imagining things!

“You sure are a jokester, Alpha Bowers,” I remarked with a sneer on her face. “I won’t beat around the bushes. I understand Franklin and Sophia wanting to see me, but what do you mean when you said you wanted to see me?”

As our eyes met, he strode towards me with his long legs.

He was much taller than I was and our height difference made me feel small.

I did not want to move, but as he got closer to me, I could not help but back up.

In no time, I was backed into a corner.

“Tell me,” Samuel growled and my heart beat picked up. “What do you think a man desires when he wants

to meet a woman?”
