This wasn’t how I planned to meet Yara for the first time since she tried to kill me, but I guess this will da and it’s not like she’s seeing my real face or anything like that.

Besides, this was more fun, the same name and the same voice of the woman she thought that she killed. It would mess with her head.

That had to be enough for now, it wasn’t time yet. Yara was still climbing to the top and I wanted her to get there, in fact I wss even going to help her get there and then Im going to be the one to push her down, she’ll have such a great fall that she’ll never be able to get up again.

So I slowly turned away from Sophia and with my freckled hyper–realistic mask, I faced Yara.

She looked older, but she tried her best to fix it up with so much makeup, she doesn’t know that just makes her age even faster.

I could see the fear in her eyes, could read the tension in her body, but when she finally laid eyes on me, it slipped away.

I totally understood why, she heard my name and she was scared that it was the sister that she killed, but now seeing my face, that looks nothing at all like my real face, she’s relieved. The ghosts of her past haven’t come back to haunt her, but that’s where she’s wrong.

Yara then proceeded to put on a thousand–watt, very fake smile as she held her hand out to me. “Hello, Ms. Edmund. I’m Yara Nichols. It’s such a coincidence, you share the same last name as my late mother.” She tells me.

Just her talking about our mother makes me boil with anger, but I do my best not to let it show on my face. Yara hated our mother, the same way that she hated me and I still don’t know why.

“Well, a lot of people who aren’t related share the same last names.” I tell her with a smile on my face.

But she wasn’t even paying attention to me, her eyes were on Samuel who was to busy focusing on the newspaper in his hands that he hadn’t even noticed that Yara was staring at him.

Seeing that she wasn’t getting his attention, Yara turned back to me and extended her hand but I just looked at her hand and I didn’t take it.

“Ms. Edmund, what are you-”

Before I could tell her what was wrong, Franklin interjected impatiently. “Can’t you see that Natalie’s hand is wounded?” He asked Yara and he didn’t look happy to see her at all.

So the kids also don’t like their fathers girlfriend?

I mean even Sophia was gripping my hand so tightly and hiding behind me. It was a complete three sixty from the girl that just spoke and was happy just a few minutes ago. I mean leave it to Yara to completely suck the happiness out of the room.

“Franklin, you-” Yara stammered.

“What?” Franklin retorted with a roll of his eyes. “I’m a five–year–old, and even I could see the bandage on her hand. How bad is your eyesight?” He snapped at Yara.

I was so shocked, Franklin might be outspoken but I’ve never seen him be this rude before. I looked at Samuel to see if he’ll say anything but he didn’t.

Yara opened and closed her mouth repeatedly, almost like she was trying to figure out what to say to Franklin. When that didn’t work, she looked at Samuel the same way that I did but he didn’t say anything.

“Samuel, aren’t you going to say something?” Yara asked him.

Samuel sighed, he looked like this was the last place he wanted to be. “He’s not wrong. I mean the bandage on her hand is clear for you to see.” He tells Yara.

“But he….but.” She continued stammering while Samuel just went back to his newspaper.

So this is how he treats his girlfriend or mistress. What exactly is Yara to him?

“You know, if your eyesight is bad, I’m sure I can refer a doctor to you.” Samuel added and it took everything in me not to burst out laughing at the table. But the kids didn’t, they both let out loud laughs.

Samuel’s tone was nonchalant, but Yara’s face turned pale.

“Samuel.” She pouted like a child.“I have something to tell you in private. Do you have time now?”

I was uninterested in the conversation between Yara and Samuel. I interrupted, “I still have to get back to the Major Crimes Unit for an autopsy. I’ll take my leave now.”

I tell them and I don’t even wait for Samuel to say anything, I’ve stayed long enough. I have my kids at home and a case to get back to.

I got up from my chair and the kids followed me out.

I nodded slightly in response, but deep down, I was utterly disgusted and also relieved that she was leaving.

She has a face full of freckles. And now, she’s telling me she performs autopsies? I guess what Gavin said was true – only Franklin and Sophia like her. Not even a beauty like me can sway Samuel’s heart, so there is no way he would come to like an ugly woman like her.

As she got up, I was so surprised to see Franklin and Sophia go after her and Samuel didn’t say anything

like it was normal.

Samuel is very protective over the kids and still he lets this woman be around them? It’s clear that I’ve been gone for too long but that is going to change.

Now, Samuel and I were the only ones left in the dining room.

I sat on the seat that was originally Natalie’s and inched closer to him. “Samuel, there’s something I want to discuss with you.”

Samuel remained indifferent.

Since there was no reply, I continued, “My dad is having his sixtieth birthday in a week. Can you bring the twins along and accompany me back to the Nichols residence at Moon Shadow Pack?”

“You want me to publicize that you’re Franklin and Sophia’s biological mother?”

“That’s not what I meant,” I said, I bit my lip before continuing, “My dad hasn’t seen the children ever since they were brought here. He really wants to see them on his sixtieth birthday.”

He just stared at me, not saying anything. “So, will you bring them?
