Chapter 142
“Gone?” I growled. “How convenient. Right when Serene needs her the most.”
“I don’t think she left willingly,” Mira whispered. “I think someone made her disappear.”
I sat back down beside Serene and pushed damp strands of hair from her face. She felt like she was burning.
“She’s hot,” I said, almost in a panic. “Is she running a fever?”
The healer stepped forward with a wet cloth and pressed it to her forehead. “No. This isn’t a normal fever. It’s her bloodline magic reacting to the bond-
and to whatever’s inside her. That darkness is feeding on her energy.”
I placed a hand over her heart. I could still feel it–the bond. Weak but there.
Still there.
“I’m not losing you,” I whispered into her ear. “Not this time. Not again.”
Later That Night
The war room smelled of candle wax and steel. Old maps were spread across the table, glowing faintly under the low lights. Weapons lined the walls,
shadows stretching across the stone floor like ghosts.
Everyone was tense. Mira sat at the far end, her fingers drumming against a closed spellbook. Reed leaned forward, his arms resting on the table, brow furrowed deep. Cassian, my top enforcer, paced near the window, restless like a caged animal.
“We don’t have time,” Mira said. “The shadow’s not just attached to her. It’s anchoring. She brought it back with her.”
Cassian stopped pacing. “If it roots too deep, we’ll never be able to remove it. She’ll either be taken… or drained until she’s nothing.”
Reed leaned in. “Then we find Aleoria. Now.”
Mira opened a thick scroll, laying it flat on the table. The parchment began to glow, soft golden letters forming across it.
“I used Serene’s blood trace. Only someone from her bloodline can activate this map fully,” Mirá explained. “Which means we need her.”
“She’s in no condition to travel,” I snapped. “She’s barely breathing, Mira.”
“She might not survive if we don’t move,” Cassian said, crossing his arms. “The longer we wait, the stronger that thing inside her becomes.”
I slammed my fist on the table, causing a few candles to flicker. “I’m not dragging her into another fight–not while she’s like this.”
Everyone went quiet.
Then Reed muttered under his breath, “Then we better pray that old woman shows up. Or we’re all screwed.”
Midnight
I didn’t leave Serene’s side.

Chapter 142
I brought a chair into her room, but ended up lying on the couch with my eyes on her the entire time. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t even rest. Every time she moved, even slightly, I was on edge. Every time the wind howled outside or a branch scratched against the window, I thought it was something coming to
take her.

Then it happened.
Her body jolted–like she’d been hit with lightning.
I jumped to my feet and ran to her side. “Serene?”
No response.
Her lips moved.
I leaned closer.
“Run…” she whispered, her voice hoarse and weak.
Then her body tensed again. Her head turned sharply, and her eyes opened-
But they weren’t hers.
They were pitch black. No whites. No pupils. Just darkness.
