11-1
Modric POV-
The word wouldn’t leave me alone. Mate.
It echoed in my chest like a war drum, pounding with every heartbeat as I stood frozen in that side room long after Mary Ann had fled. My cheek still stung from her second slap, but it was nothing compared to the chaos she’d left behind. I refused to accept it. No way. I couldn’t be mated to her -the plus–size girl I’d once mocked to keep my distance, the alliance bride forced on me by duty. She was a complication I didn’t need, a weakness I couldn’t afford.
Yet the bond didn’t care what I wanted.
I knew her wolf was silent. I could feel it through the fragile thread connecting us. She hadn’t fully experienced the pull yet, that overwhelming recognition that had slammed into me during the kiss Good. That was good. I’d keep this torment to myself. Let her think it was nothing more than anger and the ritual magic of the ceremony. The less she knew, the easier it would be to maintain the distance I’d built between us.
But Goddess, that kiss….
Against my will, my mind dragged me back to it. The way her soft, full body had melted against mine–those generous curves yielding so perfectly to my harder frame. Her heavy breasts pressing into my chest, the warm give of her waist under my hands, the lush swell of her hips fitting right where I wanted them. She was all softness and fire, responsive in a way that had undone me completely. I’d meant to punish her, to assert control, but I’d ended up devouring her like a man starved. Her taste, her little whimpers, the way her fingers had tugged my hair…
A low groan escaped me as blood rushed south again. I was hard. Painfully hard, just from the memory. I adjusted myself roughly, cursing under my breath. This was ridiculous. I was Alpha of Ironclaw, not some pup ruled by his c*ck. I stormed out of the room and headed straight for the training fields, determined to beat the weakness out of my system.
The day passed in a haze of avoidance. I threw myself into pack duties–border checks, warrior training, meetings with elders–anything to stay far from the Luna Wing. Every time I caught a glimpse of her dark curls or heard her laugh carrying on the breeze from where she worked with the orphans, I turned the other way. My wolf paced restlessly inside me, urging me to seek her out, to finish what we’d started. I ignored it. Distance was my only weapon.
By evening, exhaustion weighed on me, but the ache hadn’t faded. I showered quickly, changing into a clean black shirt and trousers, and made my way to the formal dining hall. Pack dinners were tradition, a time for unity. I couldn’t skip it without raising questions.
Mary Ann was already there when I arrived, seated at the long table in a simple but elegant dress that hugged her curves in ways that tested my resolve. She didn’t look at me. Good. I took my Nace at the head, nodding to the gathered betas, elders, and key warriors. Kylian sat to my right, shooting me a questioning glance I ignored.
The meal began with the usual chatter–reports from the day, light banter. I kept my eyes on my plate, cutting into the roasted meat with more force than necessary. But the bond hummed between us, aware of her every movement. Her scent drifted over–wildflowers and warm womany -stirring memories of her pressed against me.
It happened halfway through the main course. We both reached for the same serving dish of glazed vegetables at the same moment. Our hands brushed–fingers grazing, skin to skin.
Electricity shot through me like lightning. I yanked my hand back as if burned, and she did the same, her breath catching audibly. For a split second, our eyes met. Hers were wide, filled with the same storm I felt–hurt, anger, and something hotter underneath. My body reacted instantly, that d*mn hardness returning with a vengeance. I shifted in my seat, jaw clenched tight.
