Kylian’s words lingered like a bruise I could not stop pressing. He did return last night. He just didn’t come to see you. I kept my face calm as I walked away from the training fields, but inside, the hurt twisted sharp and deep. Modric had come home and chosen the borders again. He had slept under the same roof and still avoided me like I carried some sickness. I refused to let anyone see how much it stung. Not the servants, not the elders, and certainly not myself if I could help it.
Back in the Luna Wing, I poured every ounce of that pain into finishing the Unity Festival proposal. I wrote carefully, outlining schedules, budgets, safety measures, and ways to involve both Ironclaw and Mooncrest families. Healing through shared laughter and food felt right. By late afternoon, the document was polished and ready. I would not wait for Modric to grace me with his presence. I would leave it on his desk where he could not ignore it.
The Alpha’s study was quiet when I slipped inside. The door had been left unlocked, probably by a servant preparing the room. I hesitated on the threshold, breathing in the faint cedar scent that clung to everything. His space. Masculine and commanding, with heavy wood furniture and maps pinned to one wall. I approached the large desk and set the proposal in the center where he would see it first.
While there, my eyes drifted over the chaos covering the surface. Border reports stacked in uneven piles, some marked with urgent notes. Unfinished paperwork on supply lines, training schedules, and mediation requests from smaller packs, A half–written letter to the Moon Council lay open beside a cold cup of coffee. I realized with a start how much pressure he carried. The alliance, the recent clashes, the weight of two packs now linked through our marriage. It did not excuse his cruelty toward me, the mocking past, or the way he ran from our kiss. But for the first time, I saw the heavy burden behind his anger. An Alpha who felt trapped by duty.
I reached to straighten one stack that my sleeve had accidentally disturbed, aligning the papers neatly. The movement felt almost intimate, like stepping into a life I was not sure I belonged in.
The door opened behind me.
I turned quickly, heart jumping. Kylian stood in the doorway, surprise flashing across his face before it settled into something more guarded.
“Luna,” he said, stepping inside and closing the door. “I did not expect to find you here.”
