The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 106

Laila’s POV

The amount of money that Victor demanded from me was so much that I had to commit to a lot of overtime at work to try to make up for it. In addition, my own bills were outrageous, especially with Ava being at the hospital for so long.

The finances were mounting against me, and I was starting to feel very overwhelmed. Though, on the other hand, all of the work kept me focused on things over than the upcoming mating ceremony between Jason and Brittany.

The one I had been invited to. The one I was planning on blowing off entirelyif I thought I could get away with that. There wasn’t even an RSVP slip with the invitation. Since it was such an exclusive event, they naturally assumed all those that were invited would attend.

I was thinking of just blowing it off entirely. When I had time to think about it at all.

After a week or so of this new schedule, working myself to the bone, I was starting to wear myself thin. I was tired, barely shuffling along, and even my mind wasn’t as sharp. I had to start keeping notes on my desk about anything and everything.

Remember to send those emails.

Remember to call Sally back.

Claire’s birthday is Friday.

Don’t miss the 9am meeting.

Those were the kinds of thing that I would have just remembered in the past. Now, I needed notes or I would forget.

Too many things on my mind left little room for much else.

These notes were the only way I could keep my work from suffering, though I still saw the worried glances Claire and a few other

coworkers sent my way.

After putting in a few hours overtime, I finally made it back to the hospital.

Before I could walk into Ava’s room, however, I was stopped by one of her doctors.

Ms. Harper, if I could speak to you a moment, the healer said. I stepped aside to hear him out. I’m afraid I have bad news.

I tried to brace myself, but it wasn’t easy to do with anything concerning Ava. What’s happening?

That surgery we told you about. The one that we thought might help heal her. I regret to tell you that she isn’t eligible after all. We did the testing, and unfortunately, she just doesn’t meet the criterion.

But that’s why we are here,I said. That’s why we stayed here. She was being prepped for the surgery.

I’m sorry, the healer said. It’s a setback, certainly. But I’m still confident we can find a way to help your daughter.

When?I asked. How long does she have to suffer?

We are doing the best that we can,the healer said. We can’t rush this kind of work. I hope you can understand. I’m sorry to have to disappoint you.

I bit back the rest of my cutting words, knowing this wasn’t his fault. I hated feeling like I had been duped, given so much hope only to have it then taken away from me, butmedicine was fickle. Health care was difficult. The healers were trying their best for my daughter.

It didn’t feel good enough, but yelling at them wouldn’t change that.

Thank you, doctor,I said. I hope you can figure something out.
