Brittany’s POV
Something was wrong here. Something was very, very wrong.
Not only was Vanessa here now that it was getting to be evening, but she seemed upset by something. And she had just come out of Jason’s office. The office where I had left Jason alone with the drugged coffee.
With a growing pit in my stomach, I walked back to the office and pushed the door open. Jason was pulling his shirt on over his head. Half of his desk was thrown all over the floor. The room reeked of sex.
“What the hell?” I gasped, because even as I was piecing the evidence together, I still couldn’t quite believe it.
The coffee cup I had drugged was knocked over, the coffee dripping down onto the ground.
He must have drank some of it. He must have… with Vanessa.
That bitch.
This was supposed to be my time, my encounter, my turn to have sex with Jason and get his baby inside of me, finally making everything official.
Vanessa had come in here and in one afternoon, taken everything from me. She was just like Laila.
But I wasn’t deterred. I was annoyed, but I would squash her if I had to. I had pushed Laila out of Jason’s life, and I would do the same to her.
No matter what Jason had to say about it.
To my relief, though, Jason seemed unhappy.
I withheld a snorting laugh. Vanessa must be awful at sex for him to regret it like that.
Jason looked up and saw me looming in the doorway. “Brittany…” He closed his eyes, shook his head, and exhaled.
I braced myself for anything, not knowing what he’d say.
“I’m so, so sorry,” he said.
I exhaled in a rush, my relief coming in even more strongly now. I could laugh, but I held it back, not wanting to give away my joy.
Jason had no idea what I’d done.
“You are my fiancé and I…” He huffed. “Vanessa put something in
my drink.”
“She did?” I feigned surprise and repulsion. “Why would she do that?”
“I don’t know,” he said. “I’d thought we were getting along. The contracts were going well. We were almost… friends…” He ran a hand through his hair. “I genuinely don’t know what happened.”
“I do,” I said, lying. Now was my chance to finally push Vanessa out of Jason’s life for good. With her to the curb, taking the blame for all this, maybe Jason would finally open up to me and see me for more than a means to an end. “She wants the power you offer, Jason. That’s all she ever wanted. She only saw you for what you could do for her.”
“She never came across that way…”
“She’s good at pretending. I realized how she was from the start. If you’d listened to me…‘
“I’m sorry.”

I couldn’t help it. Even if this meant things were working out for me, I was still pissed off. I was the one who was supposed to have had sex with Jason. That Vanessa got a hold of him at all made me so angry, I was shaking with rage.
Jason must have seen it. Fm sorry,” he said again, earnestly.
“If you meant that, then you will cancel all collaborations with her,” I said. “If you don’t, how am I supposed to know that I can trust you? She got her hooks into you once, Jason. She will keep trying. I don’t want you to go anywhere near her.”
He gave me a sorrowful kind of look, but at the same time, he hesitated.
“That contract is earning a lot of money for the pack. If we just cut it off, we’ll be out several hundred thousand dollars. And people could lose their jobs.”
I scoffed at him. “So you’ll leave yourself open to Vanessa drugging you again?”
“No, I will be careful.”
“And I’m just supposed to trust that, after what happened here? This room smells like sex, Jason. And look at you! Gods, you are covered in love marks. I’m disgusted even to be here with you. You are supposed to be my fiancé. How can I ever trust you again? Especially when you won’t even do this for me?”
Jason’s POV
+
I didn’t want to fight with Brittany, especially because she was right. She was my fiancé, and drugged or not, I had sex with
another woman.
Telling her that I thought I had been sleeping with Laila would only make things worse, I knew, so I kept that bit of information to myself. Brittany had always hated Laila.
Now she had just cause to hate Vanessa too.
I wanted to hate Vanessa as well, but…
Every time I blinked my eyes, I saw Vanessa, mostly naked, her head thrown back in pleasure as I thrusted into her.
Her ruined bra and panties were still on the floor. Thank the Gods I had kicked them behind the desk, hiding them before Brittany walked into the room. They still drew my attention, sparking fresh fire in my veins, even as I tried to repress it.
I remembered how I had ripped them apart. Vanessa had gasped. I’d kissed her.
“Are you even listening to me?” Brittany demanded. She was furious. She had every right to be.
I was mad at myself too. How could I still lust after Vanessa, after what she had done to me?
“I’m listening,” I said. “I just need time to think about it. There’s more at stake with this contract than just you and me.
“I want to be more important in your life,” she snapped. “It’s like you don’t think about me at all! You don’t care!”
“That’s not true.”
”
“If it was, then this wouldn’t have happened!” She threw her hands in the air. “Think it over all you like, but if you don’t break this contract and vow to never see Vanessa again, I’ll never forgive you.”
With that, she stormed out of the room. She slammed the door behind her, but it hit so hard, it didn’t latch, ricocheting back open instead.
Her heels clacked angrily as she stormed away. As the sound grew distant, Marcus appeared at the door instead, peering inside.
