Leaning in, I pressed my face to her shoulder and hugged her as best I could.
Eventually, she fell asleep again, the last of her tears dripped down her cheeks. I wiped them away with the backs of my fingers, doing what I could for her. It was far too little.
Not long after that, the healer returned. “I’m sorry, Ms. Harper. We need to run more tests now. You will have to return to the waiting room.”
It hurt, but I knew I couldn’t get in the way of the healers, who only wanted to help my daughter.
I gave Ava one last comforting squeeze, then walked out of the room, returning to the waiting room Riley and William stood as approached.
“How is she?” William asked.
I tried to smile but I couldn’t. “She’s hanging in there…”
That said enough. Both Riley and William didn’t ask anymore.
“Our seats are still open,” Riley said.

Together, we returned to where we had been sitting before. Though, the first thing I noticed when I sat down was that there were no longer cameras peering at me through the window. Actually, the entire crowd of reporters and their camera crews had seemingly dispersed.
I had been with Ava for maybe an hour or two. Surely they hadn’t grown impatient in that time? Or had something else happened?
“I’m not complaining but where are the cameras?” I asked.
William and Riley shared a look.
“Did something happen?” I asked.
“Well, it’s just…” Riley started, stumbled.
“Other news called them away,” William said.
“What news?” I asked.
Another look passed between the two. They were clearly hiding something from me.

“Whatever it is, I can handle it,” I said. “I’m not a wilting flower. There’s a lot going on, but I can carry the weight. This is me.”
“Okay,” Riley said. She reached into her pocket and withdrew her phone. She tapped a few things, then passed it over, showing me the screen.
On it, a live feed video was playing. Jason and Brittany were sitting on a couch I recognized from the living room of the pack house. They were talking – giving an interview?
So far, from what I’d seen, they had only gone public with their relationship in staged photos and carefully worded PR statements. To do an interview like this… This was a change.
And I didn’t like it.
Brittany was laughing too hard at something the interview had said. She was leaning toward Jason, her arm bent, her hand resting comfortably on his shoulder. Her smile was so bright, her veneers were sparkling.
Jason’s face was carefully neutral, but every now and then his lips quirked upright into a semblance of a smile.

They were an attractive pair and at a glance they seemed happy.
My stomach sunk down inside of me, and I felt a little numb.
“We don’t have to watch it,” Riley said. “But you can imagine how rare this is. Alpha Jason rarely does interviews, especially with Brittany. About… their engagement.”
