The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 135

Chapter 135

Laila’s POV

I held the phone to my ear, my heart in my throat.

I didn’t really want to talk to Jason after what had seen of that interview, but I had to be strong. More than I cared about my own hurt feelings, I loved my daughter.

Her frightened eyes, and the way she told me how scared she was repeated on my mind in a loop. For her, I would swallow my pride and push down my hurt.

Jason was her biological father. He could be the donor match that she needed. I was certain that if I could just talk to him, if I told him Ava was in trouble and he could help, that he wouldn’t even need the truth to want to help her.

The phone rang and rang. Then it clicked.

I sucked in a breath.

We’re sorry. The call cannot be completed. Now transferring to voice mail.

My breath caught in my throat. I thought about leaving a message, but I was certain he would even listen, let alone reply.

I hung up.

No good?Riley asked. She was standing nearby, waiting for the news. When I lowered the phone, she approached. Didn’t he answer?

He sent me to voice mail.

Try again. It must have been a mistake.

Encouraged by Riley’s enthusiasm, I tried again. She was right. Maybe it was a mistake. He could have clicked decline by accident.

Holding my breath again, I clicked call.

We’re sorry. This number is unavailable at this time.

The call disconnected. It hadn’t even rung. I looked down at my phone, but no, I hadn’t called the wrong number. That had been Jason’s phone.

I swallowed hard.

What’s wrong?Riley asked.

I think he blocked me,I said.

Riley frowned and also looked down at my phone, like it was going to reveal to us all of its secrets. Instead, it told us nothing. This is a waste of time,I said, clicking off the phone. Maybe it’s for the best.

How?

I’m just trying to look on the bright sideI said pathetically.

Riley perked at once. Oh. Right! Yes. Listen, after the way he was acting with Brittany, forget him. There has to be another donor out there somewhere. We just need to look until we find them.

Right,I said, trying to rally my own dwindling spirits. Maybe Jason isn’t even a match.

It’s certainly possible,Riley said. Leave it to me. I’ll post in all the message boards and social media sites. We’ll have a whole

line coming through here soon enough

Okay,I said.

Riley had the right idea, but that was still leaving too much to chance. We didn’t know how long Ava had. It could take far too long to test everyone in town, even if any of them would agree to try to help.

This was my daughter’s life we were talking about. I would do whatever necessary to make sure she survived.

Even if I had to turn down darker avenues.

Riley, would you stay here and keep an eye on Ava. Call me if the healers need anything at all.

Riley looked at me with shock. You’re leaving?

I think I have another idea on how to find help for Ava, but I need to leave here to do it.
