“Vanessa, I’m so sorry to hear about Ava,” he said.
“…” What was I supposed to say? The last time I had actually seen him, he had been accusing me of terrible things. Now he was here, looking at me with sympathy, his eyes and voice soft.
A kind of warmth bloomed in nay chest, burning away some of the negative emotions I had just been harboring. With Jason looking at me so gently, it was difficult to feel gloom. Just being near him made me want to hope again.
Even if I had no idea why it was happening, I was still grateful for the effect.
With it, I was able to find my voice again.
“Thank you for coming. Were you going to try to be tested?” I asked.
“Yes,” he said, and the hope inside of me, that his presence had sparked, became bigger and bigger.
Jason had no idea that he was the one most likely to be able to save Ava, being her biological father. He’d been so difficult to get a hold of, and then everything else had happened.
I had been ready to write him off entirely as a possibility to help. Yet here he was, standing right in front of me.
In this moment, even with everything else going on, it was difficult not to notice his handsomeness. The rugged line of his jaw. The deep blue of his eyes. His wide shoulders. His strong hands, that could be surprisingly gentle when he wanted them to be. 2
I shook my head a little, shaking away the thoughts. Why was I noticing these things now? It wasn’t like his appearance had changed. He’d always been the most handsome man I had ever known.
Why did that feel more difficult to ignore than before?
Was it because we had sex?
Without meaning to, my cheeks flushed, hot, and I looked away, hoping he wouldn’t notice my sudden blush.
He must have. He stared for a moment too long, before coughing and looking away, too.
“Is this the line?” he asked. “I should go to the back.”
“No,” I said, too quickly. I cleared my throat. “I mean… I’m sure the others will understand if you cut in front. You are an Alpha, after all. Your time is valuable.”
“I don’t want to cause delay for anyone else.”

“I insist,” I said, and personally guided him to the front. I tried not to appear too eager, but I knew he would most likely be the best match. The sooner he went in to be tested, the sooner Ava might finally be in the clear.
Above all, that was still my number one priority. Once Ava was safe, I could worry about everything else alarming amount of debt and the confusing feelings that were swirling inside of me for Jason.
He’d had sex. It didn’t have to mean anything. And yet…
Jason touched my arm and I felt like an electric jolt went zipping through me.
“We’ll find a way to save Ava,” he told me.
I nodded, unable to find my voice again.
At that moment, Hannah and Jessica came out. Jason started forward.
Jessica, not paying attention, walked right into Jason.

“Careful, there,” Jason said kindly, and eased her out of the way with a soft hand on her back.
Jessica looked at him like he hung the moon and the stars.
Jason went inside, and Hannah and Jessica came to me.
I braced myself for Jessica’s wrath, but she seemed entirely distracted now, looking back at the door Jason had just gone through.
She was blushing hard, with hearts practically forming in her eyes.
“Who was that?” she asked.
Seeing her affections, something dark coiled up inside of me. “Stay away from him.”
