Jason’s POV

“For the best results,” the healer continued, “your donations cannot just be a onetime process. If you consent, we would like to have you return on a schedule to help transfer some of your wolf essence into the pup.”
“I understand,” I said. “The hospital is welcome to coordinate with my Beta to sync my schedule with whatever is needed.”
“You consent, then?”
“Yes,” I said clearly. “I will do what I can to help Ava.”
“Your wolf essence would certainly aid her, at least with this problem.”
“The pup has many problems?”
“Too many,” the healer said sadly. “For such a young thing to suffer so much is truly disheartening. But, no. We must think of the positives, and today is a big one. With your assistance, she will gain many years to her life.”
“I’m glad.” I’d done many things to contribute to societal benefits over the years. Primarily, I had donated to charities or help raise money for good causes. Never before though had I been so actively involved in the saving though. To know that it was Ava that I was helping gave me even more strength and pride.
“Would you be able to donate your wolf essence now?” the healer asked me.
“Yes, of course. Whatever she needs.”
The healer started to reach for some glass vials, but then he paused. “It’s a bit unorthodox in this setting, but… would you be willing to donate directly to her? That would be more potent.”
“Yes,” I said. “Just tell me what I need to do.”
“I will guide you,” the healer said. “Follow me.”
As we left the room, he stopped to say something to one of the nurses, who seemed stunned, but then, smiling, turned and hurried down the hallway.
“This way,” the healer said, and led me to one of the patient rooms. Inside, Ava was lying on the bed.
She looked so small there, with tubes and wires cross–crossing all around her. An IV was stuck in her arm. She had a mask on with oxygen to help her breathe.
Children were vulnerable, their wolves not fully developed. But to see Ava in a condition like this…
It tore at my heart.
She was so pale, so fragile.
Her eyes were closed, and I wondered if, as things were, would they ever open?
No. I couldn’t think like that. I was here now, and I was going to help her. The healer had already tested me. I was a match. I could save her.
“How do I get started?” I asked.
“Place your hand to Ava’s forehead,” the healer said.
I did so. For as pale as she was, she was burning up with fever.
“Now. Close your eyes. Listen to your wolf and draw them outward, but do not shift. Hopefully your wolf will recognize a pup in need and try to aid you. If they are against it… You might not be able to help after all.”

I was determined to help. Fortunately, as I closed my eyes and listened for my wolf as the healer had directed, I was able to hear my wolf loud and clear.
He was ready and willing to help Ava without question, like Ava was our own flesh and blood. That couldn’t be possible, but I was still grateful to not have to argue with my wolf. For Ava’s sake, it seemed my wolf and Thad to work in tandem.
My wolf then started to pull on the bonds between us. I didn’t truly feel anything, just a vague sort of shiver that traveled down my arm. Whatever it was slipped from my palm and into Ava’s body.
Under my hand, Ava’s fever began to break.
“Excellent,” the healer said. “It’s working.”
I gave as much essence as I could, before my wolf whimpered and started to pull back. As willing as we were to give, we couldn’t overextend and risk injuring ourselves. My Alpha healing was strong though, and soon, I knew, I would be well enough to donate again.
I opened my eyes. The healer was holding a clipboard and evaluating all the machines attached to Ava. Ava remained unconscious but I didn’t think I was imaging the fresh color to her cheeks.
A moment later, Vanessa burst through the door. She looked all around, her eyes somewhat wild as she took in the scene. She looked from me, with my hand still on Ava’s forehead, to Ava, to the healer and back again.
The healer, seeing her over his shoulder, said, “Alpha Jason is the match we’ve been hoping for, Ms. Harper. He’s just finished his first donation, and it seems to be a success.”
A look of utter relief crossed over Vanessa’s face so strongly that her shoulders slumped and her entire body seemed to deflate. Removing my hand from Ava’s forehead, I took a worried step forward, close enough that I could catch Vanessa if she fell.
She didn’t collapse though, ever the strong person that she was, even under such tremendous weight.
It was difficult not to admire her. She looked tired, but her resilience was still so strong.
She walked around me to approach her daughter. There, she reached out and touched Ava’s hand.
“She feels stronger,” she said.
The healer nodded. “It helps that our donor is an Alpha. His wolf is very strong.”
Vanessa glanced over to me.
I stood up a little taller, a little straighter, my pride pulsing through me. I felt like a good provider, a strong and capable Alpha and…
I cut myself off abruptly, because for a brief moment there, I had been thinking of Vanessa as my mate.
Swallowing hard, a flash of memory came through my mind. Vanessa’s mouth on mine, before I pushed her down on that desk
and –
“I have to go now. Please excuse me.”
I turned and started out the door.
“Jason, wait!” Vanessa called after me, but I couldn’t bear to look at her, to remember those moments, to acknowledge it happened at all. To acknowledge what it had awoken in me.
