Chapter 156
Jason’s POV
The crowd audibly gasped.
Brittany’s face went ghostly pale, before then turning red just as quickly.
I didn’t realize what was wrong for a long moment, until I replayed what I had said in my head.
Oh.
Oh, no.
Whispers started in the crowd, growing louder in volume, until the sound became an outraged roar. And everyone was against
“You are marrying Brittany!”
“Who the hell is Vanessa Harper?”
“Brittany deserves better!”
“How could our Alpha act like this?”
Looking out over the crowd, I saw many angry faces looking back at me. This ceremony was supposed to unify our pack, to bring us all together to stand in defense of Alpha Dustin and others who would want to take advantage of our perceived weakness.
Now, all I had done was further divide us.
Then, through a shift in the crowd, I saw a face I had been wishing to see.
Vanessa.
She was here?
I hadn’t thought to invite her. As she was the source of my temptation, I hadn’t wanted her anywhere near here. If I had seen her before the ceremony, I might not have had the strength to go through with it.
Even without seeing her, I had ruined things.
I couldn’t read her expression from here, but she seemed concerned.
Maybe she had a right to be. I didn’t know what the hell I was doing anymore.

“Jason,” Brittany snapped, not bothering to keep her voice low anymore. She couldn’t really, to be heard over the roar of the crowd. “Please finish the vows. Correctly. My name is Brittany.”
“Brittany…” I said, correcting myself.
“I, Brittany, hereby do take as my mate, you, Alpha Jason,” Brittany said hastily, annoyance dripping from her voice.
A small burst of electricity jolted between our hands.
My wolf growled in my mind. I bit back my own before it could escape from my lips.
It was done. Brittany was my mate. But… the thrum of the bond between us was faint and irregular. It wasn’t very strong.
Probably because I had so tremendously fucked up this ceremony.
Brittany glared at me hard, then, shaking her head, she turned and stormed off the stage.
I couldn’t bear to look at my father, but I could feel the waves of disgust coming from his direction. He had looked proud before,

but I knew I was nothing but a disappointment to him now.
I was unable to face him, or the boos of the crowd, or Vanessa, who I had called out and likely embarrassed.
Stepping back inside of myself, allowed my wolf to come forward, to protect us.
I shifted right there in the middle of the stage, and then Tran.
I leapt over the crowd, over the walls, into the woods.
The trees gave me solace, as did the quiet.
But it was not quiet inside of my mind.
Why would I say Vanessa’s name?
I didn’t have any feelings for Brittany. The whole mating ceremony was forced. should have been more careful, but I could at least understand why I would slip and not say her name.
But why Vanessa? Wouldn’t Laila have been the more obvious choice? Unless…
