Chapter 164
I was in for a lecture, and there was nothing I could do to avoid it.
My father, mother, and Brittany were waiting for me in one of the sitting rooms. When I entered, Brittany crossed her arms and looked away from me, clearly still angry with me.
I couldn’t blame her.
My father was furious too, giving me the stern look of a disappointed parent.
My mother seemed to be my only ally in the room, giving me a softer, more understanding look than the rest. We’d had our heart to heart and connected. I didn’t think that would work with my father, and I didn’t really want to try with Brittany.
“Jason. Sit.” Dad gestured to the open spot on the sofa next to Brittany.
I came in and sat down.
“Now. What happened, happened, and there is no changing that, as much as we all wish that was possible,” Dad said, looking pointedly from me to Brittany. I kept my mouth shut. “The best things that we can do now is attempt to fix what’s been done.”
“Brittany and I can discuss our relationship,” I said. My father didn’t need to be involved in that part.
“I don’t care about your relationship,” he said gruffly. “I care about the damage that has been done to this pack by your foolish actions. You need to make a public statement, acknowledging your mistake and reinforcing your love for Brittany.”
“It has to be convincing,” Brittany said snidely. “I’m not sure you are capable.”
“Brittany…” I started, unsure how to even begin to fix this.
“I admit my confidence in you is also shaken, son,” my father said “If you are incapable of fixing this on your own, then we will have to take more drastic measures.”
“Such as?” I asked, for curiosity’s sake. Even I doubted my ability to convince the world I loved Brittany, when it could not be
clearer that I did not.
“We will leak to the public that Brittany is already pregnant.”
“That’s a lie,” I said.
“Not a lie. An anticipation. You and Brittany should be working to have a baby as soon as possible anyway. What is the harm in pushing things forward?”
“This can’t be rushed,” I pressed. “It puts too much pressure on us not just me, but Brittany tos, and
“I don’t mind,” Brittany added quickly. “I think it’s a great idea.”
Mom lowered her head.
“If Brittany agrees, I don’t see any reason to delay,” Dad said.
”
“I’m against it,” I said, speaking louder. “I won’t go along with this. You all need to push this thought out of your head. We cannot lie to our pack, not about this. Not when it hasn’t happened. Not with her…”
My mother lifted her head and our eyes locked. For a brief moment, I had the wild idea of telling my father about Ava, about my donations and how she might be my daughter.
But a silent conversation passed between my mother and me. Until I had the truth, telling my father would only upset him. He wouldn’t believe me, and his heart condition might act up.
Until I could prove I already had a child in this world, it had to be a secret.

“I’m just asking for time,” I said.
