Chapter 175
Laila’s POV
He didn’t…
He never…?
Not once…?
He held my gaze. There was no lie in his eyes. I knew him well, and knew when he was being earnest. This was as open and honest as he could be.
I had no idea what to say, or even what to think!
I opened my mouth, hoping something would come out. All I could manage was a small, “Oh.”
Not a second later, Jason’s phone started to ring. “Hold on, I’ll reject the

“Then go,” I said. “We can talk later.”

I wasn’t ready for that now, even if in the past it was all I had hoped for. It was too much now. I needed time to think.
“I’m sure,” I told him.
“Okay,” he said. His phone was in his hands now, still ringing. “Just… don’t do anything rash, alright? Don’t start investigating until we talk about this. I want to be with you before you do anything dangerous.”
“I won’t do anything dangerous,” I said.
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
“Okay.” With that, he stepped out of my office and then walked to the stairs. Just as he disappeared into the stairwell, he brought his phone to his ear.
Claire peeked in at me from the desk outside the door. “Everything okay?”
“I… don’t know,” I answered honestly. “I…”
“Is there anything I can do to help? Anyone I can call?”
“No, I… I’m okay.” I liked Claire, but she didn’t know my secrets. Without knowing the truth of who I was, and what Jason had once meant to me, I had no idea how to begin to explain. “I think I’m going to just sit here quietly for a while. Can you hold my calls?”
“Of course,” Claire said, smiling kindly. “I’ll close the door for you, too. Please let me know if there is anything you need.”
“Thank you, Claire. I mean it.”
The minute that door was closed, I flopped down onto my desk chair and exhaled.
I thought I might have felt tired, or even exhausted, but in this moment, all I felt was relief. Brittany wasn’t pregnant. They hadn’t slept together. They’d never slept together?

My head was spinning with possibilities.
He had chosen Brittany over me, but then had never slept with her?
That couldn’t be right. I couldn believe it. But wasn’t that what he had said? And hadn’t he looked so earnest saying it?
In the wake of the relief came shame, pushing down at my shoulders and making me feel small.
