Chapter 181
Jason’s POV
“We should get you home,” I told her. I didn’t want to alarm her, she was safe with me, but I also didn’t like having her out here in the open
The person who had left the malice in the air could have been a random attacker, but they also could have been someone specifically hunting Vanessa. Given that she had been looking into her parents‘ mysterious death, I was willing to believe anything.
I wasn’t going to let her out of my sight.
“I can drive,” I said, because she was still shaking. “Where’s your car?”
My phone continued to buzz in my pocket. Brittany had to be pissed at me, and was only going to get more so. I had no intention of answering her calls tonight.
Vanessa’s safety was my top priority now.
Vanessa slowly pulled away from me. “This way,” she said, and led me through the parking lot. She kept glancing back at me, as
if to make sure I was there, so I stayed close to her side, occasionally bumping her elbow with my own.

Together, we moved toward her car. When we reached it, she stopped and looked at me. I held out my hand for the keys.
“You don’t have to do this,” she said.
“I want to,” I assured her
She passed the keys over.
When I pulled the car into her driveway, I told her, “Stay here and lock the doors. I’m going to check out the house.” I had to take the keys with me to unlock the house. As soon as I closed the car door behind me, Vanessa locked herself inside.
I went to the front door, opened it with the keys, and walked around inside. As I inspected, I tried very hard not to think too much about what I was looking at. This was Vanessa’s house. All of her things were here. Her entire life.
If I wanted answers about who she was, this was the place to find them. And yet, given the circumstances, I couldn’t bring myself to break her trust in looking for those things now. She was frightened. She was possibly being hunted. I had to prioritize here.
I searched every room, stretching my Alpha senses out to feel for an intruder’s presence. I detected nothing but the soft feminine scent of Vanessa, and the slowly fading scent of Ava.
Ava had been away from home for too long. Soon, he hoped, she would be able to return.
After clearing the house, I returned outside to the car. Vanessa was watching the door, her eyes zeroing in on me when I came out. She clutched her phone with both of her hands.
I moved around to her side of the car. She unlocked the door and stepped out.
“Does it look okay?”
“No one is in there or has been in there. I only scented you and Ava.”
“Okay”
She followed along behind me as I reentered her home. Seeing her like this was strange and unnerving. Vanessa had always been so confident before, so capable. Right now she was a shadow of her former self, and it made me so angry. Someone had done this to her, made her feel this small and frightened.
If I could get my hands on them, I’d tear them apart.

When we were inside, with the door closed behind us, her shoulders finally relaxed a small margin. It wasn’t enough. Not nearly enough.
She looked at me, uncertainty in her eyes. “You can go home. I… I can handle things…”
“I don’t mind staying,” I said. “In fact, I’d prefer, Just to make sure things are okay.”
Any other time, she would have sent me on my way, arguing with me all night if she had to. She revealed to me the depths of her fear simply by not arguing.
“If that’s what you want…”
“I do” I told her firmly.
