Chapter 204
“I won’t press the issue,“he said. “I can’t make you believe me. But I do you will wait for me. Just a few weeks. Until I can handle this the right way.”
“I won’t make promises,” I said, wanting to protect my heart. Maybe it was already too late.
At that moment, a knock sounded on the door, and Claire’s voice came from the other side, “Vanessa? Can I come in?”
Looking at Jason, I stepped back to the other side of my desk. He didn’t follow me.
“Come in,” I called to her.
Claire opened the door. “Oh! I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt –
“Jason was just leaving,” I said.
Jason lowered his gaze. “Yes. I was. Excuse me.” He turned then, nodded at Claire, and walked out the door. Claire watched after him a ways, and then closed the door. She turned to me.
Before she could say a word, I started, “I’m so sorry you were dragged into my family drama, Claire. I should have worked harder to keep my personal life away from my work life. I’ve tried to do that for years, and it’s worked. But lately…”
ط
“If I may ask… It seems like Adelaide has it out for you. For us all.” She stepped closer to the desk and lowered her voice.” Forgive me, but I saw some of the files Alpha Jason had brought in the other day. My mother always says I’m too curious for my own good, but I couldn’t help looking… Is Adelaide here because you are investigating your parents‘ car accident?” She clapped her hands over her mouth. “I’m being too blunt. It’s not any of my business.”
“It’s fine,” I said, holding my hand out to soothe her. “Don’t worry.”
“Is it true?” Claire asked.
Claire had been my assistant for a long time, and I trusted her. “Yes,” I said. “I think she might have had something to do with it, and she’s onto that. I believe that is why she’s really here. Why she’s watching all of us now. She’s just waiting for me to slip up somewhere.”
Claire’s face went from worried to determined in a flash. “I want to help.”
“I’d rather you stay out of it, Claire. As much as you can. It could be dangerous.”
“No, it’s the right thing to do. I can help. Or, at least, my family can.”
“Please, Claire – ”
“I don’t want to work with Adelaide, Vanessa. And helping is the right thing to do. Plus… we are kind of like friends, aren’t we?”
We were, in a way. We’d always had professionalism between us, but I trusted Claire and liked her as a person. She was a hard worker but kind. She had always been there for me before when I had needed her.
“I’m not scared,” she said. “And I can help. My uncle is a retired policeman. He was around back then. Maybe he even helped investigate that case.”
That would be a tremendous help. The files had holes in them, but someone who had been there might remember the missing pieces. If he was willing to talk.
“I can reach out,” Claire pressed.
“Okay,” I said. “But carefully. I don’t want you or your uncle drawing too much attention to yourselves. I’m not joking about this, Claire. There is real danger here. I’ve been… followed.”
