The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 207

Laila’s POV

Jason stayed with me and Ava il it was time for visitors to leave. As Ava’s mother, I was allowed to stay but Jason had to make an exit. I followed him out into the hallway. We both glanced at Ava through the window.

I could stay,he said. I’m an Alpha. I could throw my title around.

I’ll be here tonight. I’ll make sure nothing happens to her

But who is going to protect you?

I lowered my head. Jason. You know why you can’t stay.

He lifted his hand, notching his finger under my chin, and coaxed my gaze upright, back to his face.

Two weeks,he said. Less than that now.

You keep saying that.

When you will believe me?he asked.

Two weeks,I told him.

Slowly, he removed his hand from my face. I’ll prove it to you then. I don’t blame you for doubting me, even if I wished you didn’t.He smiled a little, sad. But in two weeks, I hope you will learn to trust me.

I worried my bottom lip with my teeth, to keep myself from replying, I hope so too.

Jason left then, and I walked back into Ava’s room. Ava watched me like a small hawk. Catching her, I asked, What is it?

Nothing, she said, but couldn’t hide her smile. I like Alpha Jason. He’s nice.

HeisI could see now what she was trying to matchmake again. Go to sleep, Ava. You need rest.

He’d be a good Daddy to me, don’t you think?Ava asked.

Ava,I said. Sleep.

Okay, Mommy, she said, closing her eyes. Her smile stayed all night.

The next morning, I was bracing myself for anything as I stepped into the office. To my surprise, as I exited the elevator, everything seemednormal. The coffee was brewing. Everyone was milling around. Claire was sitting behind her desk.

There was no sign of Adelaide or her securityguards. Likely because of this, the mood in the office was much more relaxed.

Morning, Ms. Harper,Claire said as I passed by her desk. We’d already talked about how we should act at work, to not give cause for any suspicion into our actions. This morning, as we were speaking, somewhere across town, her uncle Mack was searching for that diary. Soon, they could bring evidence to light to try to take down Adelaide.

Until that happened, they couldn’t give anything away. If Adelaide had any reason to suspect, she could make a run for it. Or worse, make some kind of desperate play to silence us. She was a dangerous woman. We had to stay on edge, or we might find a knife in our backs.

I’d already been weary. Since Mack’s warnings, I had been worried for Ava. Last night, I had stayed awake all night, my eyes on the door. This morning, I had called Riley, asking her to sit with Ava today. I hated to possibly endanger her but after filling her in on what was happening, she said there was no way she wouldn’t be there, determined to keep Ava safe as much as I was.

I couldn’t shake a bad feeling about everything, even now, Maybe especially now, that everything seemed fine on the surface. I felt like life was trying to get me to lower my guard before the danger would pounce.

Trying to stay calm was impossible, but I did my best as I went into itry office. I tried to focus on work, but my voice was shaky in phone calls. I put so many typos into emails I wrote that I stopped being able to track them after a while. I was going to have a lot of apologies to take later, for such lack of professionalism. With fuck, my reputation would give me some leeway with the

company partners.
