The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 234

Chapter 234

I did not kill Vanessa. No one did. The disease took her from us. Nothing they could ever do or say would make me lie about that. Time passed. I had no idea how long I lay there in that cell, until finally an officer came in and roused me. They dragged me out of the room, I couldn’t get my feet to move. I didn’t know where I was being taken and couldtr’t ask.

It wasn’t until I passed through a metal door and saw William’s worried face that I knew he must have bailed me out.

She has to be at the court,an administrator was telling William. If she doesn’t show up, or if she tries to escape, things will be worse for her.

She’ll be there,William said.

He rushed to me and helped me, wrapping my arm around his shoulder. He carried most of my weight.

Let’s get you out of here,he said, and I was happy to, even if I didn’t have the strength to lift my gaze up from the floor. I had to concentrate on my feet, on my walking, to make sure I didn’t stumble. One foot in front of the other. That was the way forward now.

Jason’s POV

I’d only just arrived at the police station in time to see William helping the fake Vanessa through the door. I wanted to approach, to offer help, but the vicious glare from William and the faraway look on her face told me I would be more of a hindrance here. She was free, at least for now, and she had William for protection. He cared for her and would get her help and keep her safe. That left things open for me to find out what the hell was happening at this police station that they would waste time with rumors when there were actual killers out there, running free.

The commissioner already threatened you,Marcus reminded me. Alpha, please don’t do anything rash.

I’m not going to punch the man out,I said, though the idea was incredibly tempting.

I’m more worried you might start a war,Marcus said. We have to play things carefully here. And we still don’t even know who that woman is. Are you sure you should go to all this trouble when you aren’t even sure?

That’s Laila,I said, though I hadn’t any proof yet. She has to be.

You don’t know that.

Maybe I didn’t. Maybe it didn’t matter who she was. No one should have been treated the way she had been, pulled out of her hospital bed and dragged here like a monster. She was suffering from silver poisoning. She should never have been taken out of that bed.

The commissioner must have been alerted to my arrival, because he was already there, waiting for me just inside the door.

I didn’t think you’d be back so soon after our last talk,he said. But I guess where this woman is involved, you can’t seem to stay away.

I hate the smell of corruption,I said flatly, giving him an ice cold stare.

Beside me, Marcus crossed his arms. He might have free rein to give me his opinion in private, but in front of others, he was on my side no matter what. Even if he didn’t agree with me, he was loyal enough to stay by my side through thick and thin.

There is no corruption, the commissioner said. That girl has been accused of impersonation and murder. Those are both serious charges. You should probably concern yourself with that.

I want to know why you are taking the word of Adelaide as law.

Our informants are none of your business.
