I think I have to fell him the truth,I said. It’s been so long, and I’m tired of the secrets. Without Vanessa, I don’t think I could make another identity even if I wanted to. Maybe it’s time for the truth to finally come out.

Are you sure about that? You’ve been hiding a long time. Alpha Jason might not take the news well.

I know,I said, and placed a hand to my chest, over my aching heart. But I can’t hide it anymore. Whatever happens, he should know the truth and he should hear it from me.”

Jason’s POV

I left the police office feeling incredibly frustrated. It was getting late, and I felt like I hadn’t made any progress at all in anything.

The commissioner had only wanted to taunt me with the fake Vanessa’s identity, but the truth was he had no idea what it was either. Everyone was grasping at straws. Her friends probably knew, William and Riley. I supposed I could have gone to them and tried to get the truth out, but I wanted to hear it from the faux Vanessa herself.

If she really was Laila, like I suspected, I wanted her to be the one to tell me the truth about it.

But, whoever she was, I wasn’t the type of man to just sit around doing nothing. So after I got into the backseat of my sedan, with Marcus sitting up front with the driver, directing him to the pack house, I pulled out my phone and called Claire’s uncle Mack

You know better than to call this number,he said when he answered.

I’m assuming you saw the news. We had Adelaide but that corruption is deep.

I warned you.

!

We have to move now to fix this. With that diary as proof, there’s no way the commissioner could turn his back,I said.

He absolutely could still turn his back, and he will,Mack said. He sighed loud enough to crackle the speaker. I’m sorry, son. But now isn’t the time. If we presented it, no one would even look at it.

They have to,I said, but I knew I was being stubborn. I just wanted an easy answer to this, but there were no easy answers. If I bring that diary back now, it will just disappear for good this time. It won’t solve anything. Maybe, once things get sorted with Miss Harperor whoever she isMaybe then we can focus on bringing Adelaide down. But until then, Adelaide still holds all the cards here.

I cursed.

Yeah, it sucks. I’ll wait to hear from you again when all this dies down.

He hung up, and I lowered my phone.

I cursed, again, louder. I hated this feeling. There had to be something I could do, some way to solve all this. Or at least solve some small part of this.

I felt like everything was spiraling out of control.

Then I remembered Brittany, and all that she had done that night. She had drugged me, tried to keep me from going after

Vanessa.

She still had to pay for those crimes.

At the pack house, I exited the car with new determination.

Marcus,I called, Bring Brittany to my study. It’s time to deal with her.
