Where was he even getting these ideas? Brittany had done little more than annoy him over the past six years. He’d barely tolerated her. Why was he now such an adamant champion of hers?
It didn’t make any sense.
“So long as I am Alpha, Laila and Ava will always be welcome here. And I fully intend to make Ava my heir.”
“That child is far too weak and fragile to carry the burden of
“I will help her. She is my daughter and I will see that she is taken care of,” I said. “This is non–negotiable.”
Dad buffed. “Fine. The child can come. She is of our blood, and that’s only right. But Laila will never be welcome back into this home. And the sooner you can see the truth of what she is, the better it will be for all of us.”
“I know the truth of who she is,” I said firmly. “It’s only because I refused to see her in the past that I hurt her so much, pushed her away, and made us both miserable. I will not be making that mistake again, no matter what you say or how you try to convince me. And that’s final.”
“Jason –” Dad started, and then stopped abruptly. He clutched his chest as pain crossed his face. “Jason,” he said again, but this time it was spoken differently. Less frustration, more urgency. More fear.
Suddenly, he slumped on the chair.
“Dad?” I reached out for him, but his eyes slid closed.
Alarm filling me, I jumped to my feet and ran to the door. “Help! Someone call an ambulance! My father needs to get to the hospital?”
The servants moved at once, while Mom came rushing toward me, “What is this? What’s wrong?”
When she saw Dad, she gasped, then ran forward to tend to him.
“Oh, please, wake up,” she said, tears in her eyes.
The ambulance came quickly, and the emergency healers rushed Dad to the hospital. Mom and I followed along
“You said you weren’t going to upset him,” Mom said. “We talked about waiting until after the surgery. What happened?”
“He came to me, wanted to talk about Laila,” I said. “I couldn’t lie to him. Laila is back, and Ava is my daughter. I want them both in the pack.”
“And he didn’t?”
“He kept saying that Laila is manipulating me. I have no idea why he would think that, do you?”
Mom frowned. “He received a note early this morning, but he wouldn’t tell me what it was about. He seemed worked up. I tried to get him to calm down. Oh, Jason…. Gods help him. If something happens… If he doesn’t wake up…”
“The healers will help him,” I said. “They have to.”
We rushed to the hospital, following along behind the ambulance. After Dad was admitted into the emergency room, Mom and i
stayed in the waiting room. I told Mom everything that Dad and I talked about. She was frantic, and I tried to calm her. But my own pult was getting in the way
I couldn’t change what i said, and I wouldn’t even if I could. Laila and Ava were important to me. I was done hiding how I truly
fell
But, if this hurt Dad…
If it killed him..
