“Your father made it seem like such a good idea,” she said through her sobs. “He kept telling me that Ava needed pack. That she needed us. He said that Latta had manipulated you and me. That she was only using Ava as a tool against you.”

“Dad said that?”

“Yes. And he believes it, Jason…. I’m so used to your father being the voice of reason. Maybe I didn’t want to see the change in him. Maybe I was hoping he would just go back to how he was before all of this, the calm and confident leader who always had the answers. More and more, he’s hardened. He’s turned against Laila. Against you.”

Mom cried harder. This time, I couldn’t resist reaching out, wrapping a comforting arm around her.

“Do you think it’s his mental health?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” Mom replied. “It could be that. But I don’t… I don’t know. I worry someone is talking to him. Telling him these things. Maybe that’s what I hope for. Isn’t that terrible? What kind of horrible wife am I, to hope my husband is being manipulated?”

For a while, I held her as she cried. She was an old woman, my mother, who had made a terrible mistake. She could make up for it though, in time. Especially now that she seemed to have the fog cleared from her mind.

My father though… He was the ring leader in all of this.

If he was losing his mental capacities, I had to find that out. Nothing could be done in that case but to find him the best of healers. But if someone was whispering in his ear… If he was being taken advantage of in his state…

That was something I could deal with.

I stayed with Mom for a while longer, until she went up to her room to rest, then I called Marcus, and filled him in on the situation.

And I told him I wanted surveillance on my father’s hospital room.

“Are you sure, Alpha?” Marcus said. “He’s very respected as a former Alpha People may be critical of any sign of mistrust against him.”

“Only use people that we trust implicitly,” I said. “I know the risks here. But if my father is being manipulated, we need to stop

If someone was doing this to my Dad, I wanted to know who. And I was going to make them pay.

Laila’s POV

I was still fuming on the car ride home, but I was trying to hide it, not wanting Ava to be any more affected by what happened today than she already was.

Unfortunately, Ava’s curiosity was boundless, and her patience was limited. I’d told her we’d talk about things when we got home, but she couldn’t seem to wait, as she looked at me.

“Sarah… asked me to call her grandma,” Ava said. “I wasn’t sure if I should or not.”

“I don’t think you will be seeing her for a while,” I said.

“But why would she want me to call her grandma?”
