Chapter 305
Laila’s POV
Brittany sat back down on her chair, her face blank, her eyes filled with disbelief.
I looked at Marcus and he nodded at me. Together, we turned and walked out of the room and into the hallway. As soon as the interrogation room door was closed behind us, a pair of strong arms wrapped around me, tugging me to a broad chest.
Jason’s scent of leather and pine washed around me, and relaxed at once. In there with Brittany, I hadn’t realized how much tension I had been carrying. With Jason, my body knew that I was safe inherently, so all of the stress I had been secretly holding inside of myself seeped away.
His hold was secure and firm, tight enough to make me feel safe but never enough to actually hurt me. I was quickly lost to it, to the feel of the press of his muscled body to mine.
I never had to worry when he was near me.
“We need to move out of this area,” Winston said, breaking our moment. “With a confession like that on tape, we can move forward with processing Brittany. She’ll have a jail cell in an hour.”
Slowly, reluctantly, Jason and I pulled away from each other.

“Thank you, Winston,” Jason said.
Winston looked at me, and the corner of his mouth quirked upright, ever so slightly.
“Thank Laila. She’s the one who did the hard work,” Winston said.
“Oh, I intend to,” Jason said. I glanced at him just as his gaze heated, looking at me. My body reacted at once, taking on fire of its own, even leaning into him. “Come with me, Laila. I need to speak to you. Privately.”
In that moment, I would have followed him anywhere.
He led me out to his town car, and together, we crawled into the back. The partition was up, though the driver wasn’t around. With the tinted windows and the doors locked, we were alone, sitting next to each other.
“Jason –” I started, cut off when he leaned in and kissed me.
I curled into him, my body moving on its own. His arms wrapped around me, my fingers combed through his hair. Before I knew it, I was on his lap.
Beneath me, his dick started to harden. Our tongues tangled. His hand traced up my spine.

My brain was overloading, and I struggled to hold it all together. I wanted more. I wanted everything. I wanted him to take me on the backseat of this car.
But just as the flash of desire sparked inside of me, so too did the chill of fear. And the fear was much more effective, freezing my heating body just as I was about to grind down.
I froze.
Jason stopped as well, his hands still on him back. Breaking the kiss, he looked at me. “What’s wrong?”
“Why are we doing this?” I whispered.
“We want to too,” Jason said. “We care about each other. And…” He licked his kiss–red lips. “Can’t you see how bright the future is for us now? With Brittany finally facing punishment for what she’s done, you don’t have to be afraid anymore. We can have this. Without complications.”
I wanted to believe that, to fall into Jason’s words and forget my own pain, our shared past. But I couldn’t.

Brittany had unly been part of our problem. We had plenty of others. And I had a daughter at home. All the more reason not to fall into this.
Gods, it had been so easy to fall into this.
“Laila,” Jason said, a slight plead in his voice. He knew me, he must have known that I was pulling away, that my walls were coming back up.
